Title: Dr. Brown Bottles and formula
Post by: Barley on February 05, 2009, 18:42:51 pm
I have a question about using the Dr. Brown's bottles and powdered formula for anyone who used them.  Once we hit 8 oz of eating I know that I will be able to hold all 8 oz. in the bottle once the powdered is added because they will leak. I am just curious as to how anyone handled this?  Used two bottles?  Went to a different brand or type?  We are using the Dr. Brown's natural flow that has the vent system in it.

I used Dr Browns bottles throughout feeding William and have to say that I never found that they leaked when we used them for higher volume feeds. If I were you in that situation I'd use two bottles with two smaller feeds in if you can cope with all the washing up - those Dr Browns were so fiddly to wash lol..

mine didnt leak as well. the only time they leaked was if the inside inserts were 'forgotten' a common occurance with DH!

Well, we had problems with the 4 oz. bottles when we hit 4 oz. with them leaking because it pushed it over the line that says don't have liquid above this line and they did leak. But, maybe that will not be an issue when he hit 8 oz.  We still have awhile before we get to that point, but it just has been on my mind.  I will keep my fingers crossed. I like the bottles but hate the clean-up!

I used those bottles and they did leak when overfilled past the line... I just filled them twice.  I didn't find them a pain to wash since I put all parts in the dishwasher except the nipple... then again, DD only gets a bottle once in a blue moon.

We used the Dr. Brown bottles but we never had any problems and we regularly went over the fill line  :)

We always fill these with 8oz of water and then add our powder... have never had a problem.  We don't "shake" the bottle though, we tend to swish it in circles to mix it.  I think if you shake it, you'll end up with leaks.

That is true now you mention it - we found that the bottle leaked if it was shaken so swished it in circles too..

Ours too only leaked if shaken - something that constantly perplexed DH (how many times must he be told!)  In the end we used to stir it with a spoon.

Okay, this makes me feel better because I was thinking there was something wrong with our bottles.  We do stir them to so we don't get anything up in the straw thing.  But, I am glad know that I will have to use to bottles or fill them up twice.

I use Dr. Browns as well, and a couple of months into it I found the caps for the bottles, so you can shake formula without the worries of getting it up in the straw.  They worked well for us, just a suggestion!

We use Dr B's and ours leak!  We are on Nutramigen and that needs to be mixed with quite cool water, so the problem isn't in the making them (a good swirl and then a good shake!) but yes, I do find they leak while feeding.  I deal with it the first ounce or so, wiping the bottle with a muslin while I go, or sometimes even holding it with a muslin around it, and then once DS has had an ounce or so, open it up so that it goes down the straw, close it tightly again and no problems.  Can sometimes be a pain, but not much more so than anything else with babies!

Does any one know, are Dr Brown's bottles good for babies with Reflux?

Hmmmm.....tbh, I can't really see it making any difference. The Dr B's are designed to eliminate your LO swallowing extra air - they have a funny vent thing in it that channels the air down to the bottom of the bottle. With reflux, it's not air that is causing the problem, it's food/milk itself.  Swallowing less air will give your LO less wind, which will make him/her less windy, and have fewer burps, which could then lead to less posset, but really, with reflux, he/she will still bring up the food anyway.  At least that would be my logical resaoning on it!
