Title: 9 month old routine? HELP!
Post by: amelaugh on June 10, 2013, 06:56:20 am
Hi ladies,

I am desperate for some advice from you   :D

My almost 9 month old will not sleep past 6am. It never happens. My OH works abroad a lot and I am on my own, so an extra hour in bed would be like gold to me

Below is her routine. The things I have tried are, black out blinds and curtains, bedding, different nappies, bringing her bed time forward by 15 and 30 mins, everything really!  ::)

6am - Wake
7am - Bottle
8am - Solids
8.30am - Nap. This nap is usually 40 mins but can be 90 mins at times.

9.20am - Awake.
11.30am - Start lunch - solids
12.30 - Bottle
1pm - Nap. Usually for around 1.5 hours, but can be 40 mins also.

3pm - Sippy cup with a couple of oz in.

4.30/5pm -  Dinner solids
6pm - Bath
6.30pm - Bottle
7pm -  Bed

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

PS - Just as a side note - she was a serious catnapper and having 3 x 40 mins naps per day. So I increased her awake time in the morning and afternoon to eliminate one of them.

Hi there.

Have you seen this thread about A times?

What are A times and how do they fit into the EASY plan?

For a 9 month old those A times are still quite short - many LOs are managing 3-4hrs by this age. I would suggest you push that first A a little longer and you should get a more consistently long first nap. When you get that, push out the second A too.

You also have quite a long gap between the second nap and BT - stretching the A times should help even things out a bit through the day. What do you think?

Thanks Buttonbobs  :D

I am going to try pushing the morning nap out to 3 hours this morning  :o

I suppose I am worried I keep her up too long, then she is OT and only sleeps 30 mins or so, so is exhausted for the rest of the day. It's all trial and error though!

Interestingly, yesterday she woke at 6.15am, and due to her teeth bothering her she didn't have her first nap till 9.15am and she woke at 6.45am this morning!

I kept her up for 3 hours this morning. She woke at bang on 40 mins, let out a few baba's, then slept again for a grand total of 1hr and 45 mins!

Yaaaaay!

Now how long do I keep her up for the next nap?
3 hours again? She woke at 11.30am, so 2.30pm would be about right seeing she goes to bed at 7pm.

Not bad, I would stick with the same A times for a few days and perhaps shift a little bit more when you see how that goes. Keep me posted  :)

She still woke at 6am.

These 6 o'clock starts are driving me mental. Nothing I do helps her sleep longer.

Honestly though hun of bedtime is 7pm, shea getting 11 hrs overnight and that's a full nights sleep. Some babies just don't do 12 hrs at night.

True. I need to relax that she's getting enough. :)

Agreed :) I think if you're generally getting good naps, undisturbed nights, and a happy baby then the LOs sleep needs are probably being met.

Sounds like UT still hon, 3hrs is still on the low side for her age. If she is coping oky with the 3hrs I would increase that a time again if it were me.

I'll try increasing it again by 15 mins tomorrow and see if that helps.
Lord but its hard getting it right!  ???

Hmmmm... You're preaching to the converted!! We were endlessly tweaking a times at that age! And you just get it right and their needs change again! As the others said though, I wouldn't worry too much if your nights are okay and one of her naps is a long one. A lot of babies this age actually need one long and one shorter nap as they approach the 2-1 transition to keep their nights decent.

We found that tired signs became really unreliable by this age, we were going much more by a times (whilst obviously still being responsive and veering from routine if it was needed) He would display tired signs when bored, wanting a change of scenery, over stimulated etc...

Thanks for all your advice! Its like a science lol  ;D

When do they start taking just one nap? Hopefully a while yet while I get used to just the 2!

Usually somewhere around 14-15 months, but it's a couple of months of transition before then. Some make the change early, around a year old.

How long A times are you doing?

Between 3 to 3.5 hours. I'm treading a fine line between OT and UT.

Any later and she wakes after 30 mins. Its killing me. I can see she's exhausted and she keeps waking up and nothing I do helps.
I am also at the end of my rope with these 30 or 40 min naps. I dont have time at all to myself. It's driving me insane. I feel like I just don't get a break.

Sorry for the whinge. I just am having a bad day  :-[

On another note, the days it looks like she is going to have a long nap, its ALWAYS interrupted by a poo. Always.

Are her nights still good? Sometimes little ones can get in a bit of and UT/OT cycle, they short nap because of short a times but get overtired from repeated short naps. I think this might be whats going on. The only way to get out of it a lot of the time is to stick to an increased a time for few days to give them time to adjust to it and hopefully start taking longer naps. How has she coped with 3.5hrs awake time when you have done it?

Her nights are still good. We had a few bad interrupted nights of teething there, but last night was ok thankfully.

At 3.5 hours her eyes are all red, hanging out of her head, she's all jerky and shouty because she's way overtired.
