How is Shh/Pat technique different from rocking/nursing to sleep?

As I was trying to shh/pat my DD to sleep today (7 weeks), I was just wondering how is it different? She will not sleep on her own if I just put her down even drowsy. I have to do either rocking and shushing or smth else. I've just recently started trying to shh/pat instead of rock for some of the naps (other naps she is taking in a carrier on me). And I have to stay with her during the whole nap pretty much and keep shushing every time it looks like she might wake up.  She is not sleeping on her own and that's the goal. So isn't the same in a way?

Just need some reassurance and hope   :)
