moving him out of a crib...
« on: August 18, 2008, 23:38:09 pm »
My son is 19 months old right now.  In probably October we will be moving him to a twin size bed so that we can use his crib for the baby.  We are doing it so early, even though I'm not due until February, because I want him to be used to his bed when baby gets here, plus I don't want him to feel like he/she has taken his place.  I expect it will be a struggle for a few weeks or more, so I also don't want to be in my third trimester when we start this.  I've talked to his doctor and he thinks we are on the right track.  But how do I make the transition?  His room is too small to put the bed and his crib in.  What do I do if he won't stay in his bed?  We usually keep the door to his room closed at night and would like to continue with that, but if he gets out of bed and we hear him on the monitor, do we go in, or just stay out unless he cries?  Any tips or experience stories would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Hi Serenity,
we just started his transition with DS last week. It is actually going OK. I have the crib and twin bed in his room, but we have not used teh crib once since we began. I just felt better knowing I could offer that option if things go crazy.
We talked about big boy beds with Sam a ton before we actually made the transition. We tried to get him excited about it. We also made his BBB a car theme--which he loves---so it's exciting if I ask him if he wants to go night night in his BBB with the cars. ALthough it has been good so far, I am realistic that things could still take a turn for the worst (probably this week when DH is out of town). It sounds like your expectations are realistic as well, so that will help, IMO.
As far as going itno his room..........I don't know--we don't have that part down to a science yet. Sometimes we go in a few times, to remind him it's night night and he should get in bed; and sometimes we get sick of it and as long as he doesn't need anyhting from us (reassurance, etc.) we'll let him be--in that case, he typically climbs into bed after 10 min or so of "exploring" and goes to sleep.
I hope that helps, good luck!!! I know I was nervous!!

Thanks!  I'm starting to get excited about it and all, but I sure was freaking out.  I have alot of freak outs about changes coming up.  I guess all I really need to do is decide if we'll go in and put him back in his bed when he starts playing, or if we'll wait until he starts banging on the door, or if we'll just let him be.  I think in the beginning we'll need to put him back in bed to make sure he understands what it's there for and that he needs to use it, then I think we'll have to wean off of going in and just give him some time to get the idea.  I'm sure when he's 16 we won't have to tell him to put his toy cars down and climb in bed 10 times a night.  I think I'll call the doctor tomorrow and get some more detailed advice as to when to go in.  Thanks alot!

I wasnt sure if my dd was ready to transition to a big bed so I put her crib mattress on the floor and started that way.  It worked out well and we got her a big girl bed.  You might be able to borrow a toddler bed for a bit if you feel more comfortable having him in a "bed" before you put the twin in his room.
