how does cluster feeding work here?
« on: March 02, 2009, 09:18:58 am »
If my routine usually goes like this:

E:4.30
A: till 5.30
S: till 6.20 (catnap)

A: bath till 6.50
E: till 7.15-7.30ish
S: 7.30

DF: 10.30

would i change it to this for cluster feeding:

E:4.30
A: till 5.30
S: till 6.20 (catnap)

A: bath till 6.50
E: till 7.15-7.30
S: 7.30

Cluster: 9.00
DF: 10.30

or do i make his E at 6.30 and bath after that?? (he prefers bath first then a feed usually) and then have the cluster at 8.30 and DF at 10.30 OR
do i keep as above??
Tracey mentions in her book to start cluster feeding at 6 weeks and DS has just turned 6 weeks so i thought i should be cluster feeding but im worried its too soon after the 7ish feed and he wont eat... im confused

 HI there,

when i did the cluster feeds I did 4,6 and 8 but it did mean bottle before bath which ds didn't mind. But I don't think it matter when you do them really as the objective is to tank them up. If you do cluster at 9 just make sure your df is on the later side, say 11. I dropped the cluster at 7 weeks as ds was taking more and moved the 6 feed to 7 before bed which works great. I have during gs clustered at 7 before bed then at 9, kind of like a df then df at 11.

Hi There,

I am also trying to figure out how to do the cluster feed with my DS who just turned 8 weeks. Do you feed the same amount at each of the cluster feeds as you would at a normal feed?

Currently this is what we are doing in the evening:

E - about 5.30 - 150mls
A - Bath at 6ish
E - 6.45 - 7ish - 50 mls
S - 7pm (it takes a long time to settle at this sleep but that is for another post)
E - 9pm - 125mls (he is unsettled till this feed)
DF - about 11ish - 125 - 150 mls

Should I be offering him a bigger amount after his bath? He normally takes about 150mls at each feed during the day.

Thanks for your help.

 Hi there Khansen

For cluster feeds give them as much as they will take as the point is to get as many calories in during the day to ensure a longer stretch at night. You will start to see when it needs dropped as your LO will take less and less to the point where what they take during those 2 feeds can be given in 1 iykwim??

TRacey reccomend dropping them at 8 weeks but if they work for you there is nor reason hy you shouldn't continue them.  ;)

 Hope this helps....xxx
