Breastfeeding & Sleeping Through the Night
« on: October 17, 2014, 00:23:21 am »
Wasn't sure if this is the right place to post so remove if necessary. My baby, 5 months, 18 weeks corrected has never slept longer than 4.5 hours which happens rarely. How do I know when to drop night feeds and if my baby is just waking up out of habit? Is the feeding preventing him from sleeping through the night? We haven't started solids and don't expect to for at least another 6 weeks.

Thanks!

BF babies waking to eat is totally normal for a while to come. Up to 8 or 9 months they may be legitimately hungry. My 11 mo old eats 3 times a night still. :P she doesn't take much in the way of solids and is so distracted with her daytime nursing that I know she still needs to eat, although not that much the little monkey!

Anyhow, I would for sure keep feeding at this age and revisit later.

Does he fall asleep feeding in the day or can he put himself to sleep?

Feeding at night at this age is definitely normal though.

No he doesn't fall asleep during the day after feedings and he can't put himself to sleep yet either. Good to know the feedings are still necessary. Thanks!

I'd work on getting him comfortable with falling asleep on his own in the choir during the day and then the NFs should reduce on their own as he doesn't need them.
