BF when your LO has teeth
« on: June 16, 2015, 02:38:20 am »
DS now has 4 top and 2 bottom teeth. Hes not biting or clamping down but I do notice his teeth now. It doesn't hurt, its just irritating, like if you sit in front of a Jacuzzi jet for too long  :P and I really only notice when hes tired and his latch gets a little lazy. Im not sure if I should correct this or if its anything that needs correcting at all, just part of nursing an older baby?

I notice H's teeth more when she's teething.  If it only happens when your DS is tired then it probably doesn't need "correcting" as such, but maybe just break the latch and put him back on again at times when it's bothering you to see if that helps.

I don't think you *need* to correct it unless it is bothering you.

You can try different positions if he will let you so the teeth do not rub against the same area of skin all the time or you can encourage him to take a really big mouthful which I find helps. So when he opens up kind of gently push the breast deeper into his mouth.

I do find when they are teething they can take a while to find the new best latch and during that transition it can be irritating.

There is also this helpful FAQ that you could check out How do teeth change things? – teething and biting.

Thanks ladies! I was terrified you were gonna say it's time to ween him off of nursing. People irl think I'm crazy nursing him with all those teeth and honestly, I thought people who did it were crazy/ brave as he!! to nurse with a baby with teeth lol. Funny how things change huh??? ; )

I think it sounds much worse than it actually is!  I've/I'm bf'd both mine with lots of teeth ;D and not had any issues.  Maybe one or two nips in total and far less painful anyway than the sore nipples when you're just starting BFing!
