Weaning- When to drop a bottle ?
« on: September 29, 2015, 14:44:35 pm »
My boy is 6.5 months and has been having purees/food pouches for a month now. Started on just breakfast for a couple of weeks and then introduced a bit of dinner... Wondering if/when to drop a bottle. Is it only once they are on established 3 meals at 8 months ish?

7am - 8oz bottle
8am brekkie- fruit purée or porridge
11am - 8oz bottle
2pm- snack-rusk
3pm - 8oz bottle
5.30pm - dinner (half a pouch )
7pm - 8oz bottle
3am - BF

Any advice greatly appreciated
Thanks xx

Most bottle fed babies drop to 3 bottles around 10 months. Milk needs to be the main source of food until they are 1, so you don't want milk intake to start dropping too soon.

The usual pattern is around 10 months to move to a wake up bottle, a post lunch, pre nap bottle and a bedtime bottle. They tend to drop to a morning and bedtime bottle around 1.

Your current routine looks great, I would introduce finger foods with the meals you have rather than rushing to introduce another meal. You don't want milk intake to drop below 24oz, so if he starts refusing milk then you will need to scale solids back until the milk intake picks up again.

HTH!

That's great- really helpful thanks. So will carry on as we are and just add a few bits of finger food with dinner. He's definitely up for that as he grabbed my mums toast today and started chomping!! Definitely wants more than purée 😉
Thanks a lot for comment. Will reassess the bottles in a couple of months.
