Can a baby feed too much?!
« on: April 28, 2016, 14:10:20 pm »
My lo has just turned 5weeks old and is exclusively breast fed. He feeds A LOT during the day!! Sometimes not even an hour passes by and he wants more. After each feed he is content and will either go to sleep or do some awake time- cooing etc. At night he feeds every three hours or so.

Bare with this question.. Does he feed because he's bored??! It's sooo often!!

He also gets a windy tummy and the suck helps him to pass wind but he isn't just using my nipple as a dummy he is definitely feeding as you can hear him swallowing and drinking from the other side of the room!

Nope, not possible to over feed a bf baby! He's likely just stimulating your supply at this stage. Grab a drink, blanket, box set and go with it, it won't last long.

This could be why he's feeding so frequently - with the windy tummy, he may be having to drink because your milk is squirting at him. He may then be gulping in air and needing to feed again to pass more wind - a fun cycle! How is he in general otherwise? What are his nappies like?

I had this issue and it caused us all sorts of issues. The frequent feeding, hearing swallowing so loudly and wind is what makes me suggest that you read this: Oversupply and Overactive (Forceful) Let-Down

It could absolutely also be that he's stimulating your supply - normal GS time :)

Thanks for your advice.
The dummy helps him pass wind and I'm using infacol too. Fingers, toes and anything else crossed we had a good night last night- last feed 2200 then he woke at 0309 with wind, I gave the dummy and he farted a lot then had a double breast feed them slept until 0700. Does this sound good/normal for his age (turned 6 weeks today).

Sounds fab! Gripe water is also good for digestion, as is fennel tea for you (2-3 cups a day).
