how to plan your day w/solids
« on: April 28, 2006, 13:39:27 pm »
Hi
I've been looking at a lot of EASY posts, and I was wondering how do you ever get out of the house. It seems like they are always eating every few hours. Have any of you ever gave bottle or breast at 5 hours rather than at 4hours intervals, making sure at the end of the day he would of consumed the same amount of liquids. My DS is not a big eater and doesn't seem to drink much if he has solids. He's still 2 weeks away to 6 months so I just give one solid in the morning, I would like to start another in the afternoon before 6 months. If I go by the easy routine I have seen we'll never be out of the house. He'll be either eating or sleeping.
here's what we do
7 breast or bottle 4 oz(depending on his mood)
8 solids pears or apple with oat cereal (approx 4oz) if I give less he demands more
9 nap 1hr45min-2hr (yeah, finaly naps this long)
11 breast or bottle 4 oz(once again depending on mood)
1-1:30nap 1hour
3 bottle 6oz
4 catnap 30 min
7 bedtime routine, bath, bottle 7-8oz, bed 7:30-8pm
he still gets around 20oz of liquids, is that enough

Hi there,

Everything I've read says that at 6 months (or not even, in your case) your LO should be getting 32 oz of formula or breastmilk, and that's not including any water or juices.   I'm no expert but I would suggest in your case, when you offer the solids an hour after the morning bottle, try offering the bottle/breast again first.  And for the other milk feeds, maybe try offering again 30 mins-1 hr later to see if he'll take more.  The Super Baby Food book says that if your LO isn't having 32 ounces of formula/breast then you need to decrease the amount of solids.  So going by that, I don't think adding another solids meal at this point would be a good idea.

Your other question about seeming like the babies are always either eating or drinking, I hear ya!!  I have twins and I swear to you someone is in a highchair being fed SOMETHING at all points during the day...it's even harder for me because my DS has only JUST starting taking the occasional solid while DD has powered through all kinds of foods so I'm offering them different foods and at different times too due to their different appetites!!  Anyway, sorry...didn't mean to make this all about me LOL...just wanted to share my own confusion over how the heck to get anything done with all the eating going on.  :)

Good luck to you!!

Yup, that's one of the things nobody tells you...starting solids means you feed practically all day. It will get a bit easier when your LO drops the catnap and has more awake time, but it's still a pretty big chunk of the day. When Tyler was younger, I almost always gave him his solids lunch when we were out and about so we could at least get something done, or if he woke early from a nap, we'd leave right then and do his nursing or bottle on the go. It meant always having the diaper bag packed and ready to go, but it was worth it.

Like Sarah said, at that age they should still be having about 32 oz of formula or breastmilk per day, or as much as they had before starting solids. Solids shouldn't decrease formula or breastmilk intake at all for a couple more months, so if it is, you may consider offering less solids, especially one you start introducing additional meals. Good luck!

Thank you both for your replies. I am a bit concerned about the amount of liquids he takes. He's always been this way. Let say I don't bfeed at all in the day he would only take max 24-28oz of formula or ebm in a day without solids. He's on the small side though, only 16lbs, if size matters.
As for the solids, it's just in time for summer, I might as well keep the high chair outside if I want to see a bit of sun :)

SylvieA,
You may want to have a look at this link....  http://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/milkcalc.html
It sounds like your baby is actually "almost" taking enough. If he used to only take 24-28 OZ of formula... then that's all he needs. I would try to keep his milk intake consistent with his presolid quantities. My son, born Oct 14, 2005, has just started taking solids and the community health nurses (2 of them) said that if he is getting 4-6 milk feeds in a 24 hr period, then that is great. One of the nurses also reminded me that they are very efficient at this age and that if he stays on the breast for 5-10 minutes = perfect.
This is our feeding schedule and Cory seems to be taking a good quantity of milk.
7am BF
8:45 solids 2 cubes of pear or apple and 2 TBSP of rice cereal
11:45 EBM with solids. 3/4 of a jar. This is great cuz we can be out and Cory likes to sometimes have boobie milk, solids, boobie milk.
4:00 BF
6:45 solids (3/4 of a jar or the equivalent if he will take my home cooking;-)
7:15 BF

(1am BF for 10 minutes.. can't seem to get rid of this one;-) ... The great thing, I guess, is that I don't know how much he is getting in term of BF'ing. I simply have to trust that he is taking what he needs. Beside, us moms know a good BF when we have one!!!

I do find it a little troubling that the Super Baby Foods Book (which I am interested in buying) is suggesting that formula fed babies and breast fed babies are supposed to take the same amount. I do find that hard to believe. The reality is that breast milk changes along with the babies needs... formula is a formula that stays the same.
Good luck

Thank you corysmommy
It is really reassuring me. This morning he Bfed for about 10 min max and I didn't think he had enough so I warmed up 4 oz of EBM and he would not take it (went down the drain instead :( )so I assume he had enough. tried feeding 3 1/2 hrs later and didn't look too interrested either. I should start trusting myself and baby a bit more that he getting enough and that I'm making enough milk. Thanks again

You totally need to trust yourself...Personally, I am still trying to do that;-) BTW, I sometimes give Cory EBM after a feed but I either leave it out from when I express (room temp) or give it to him cold. This way... you don't have to toss that liquid gold down the drain if he doesn't take it. It can then go into the fridge/freezer!!!! Good Luck! ;D
