Why is egg white bad for an under 1 year old?

Just a question regarding eggs. I have read that one should wait until l12 months for the introduction of egg whites. Does that include whole egg in recepies? The only reason I ask is that I found a great recepie for carrot pancakes for over 9 months...my boy is only 9 months exactly. We have no history of allergy in both sides of the family.........any input much appreciated. thanks! Anna

It's because of the protein in the egg white.  It's high on the allergen list.  Can't advise further as we do have egg allergy history here.  But please post the recipe in the recipe forum.  It sounds yummy!!!!!!!

My understanding is that the protein in egg whites are not broken down by immature intestines of young babies and then leaks/seeps into their bowels. They can then develop antibodies and allergies as a result.  I've decided to wait with egg whites, even though we have no history of allergies either, just to be on the safe side.  Egg yolks are ok though.

Thats what I thought. thank you....i would like to try the pankcake thing, but maybe i ll wait a month or two. here is the recepie anyway- v. easy!

100 grams flour
150 ml milk
1 egg

tsp of oil
50 g grated carrot

Mix up batter first, then stir in the carrot (i guess <ou cold try any veg too) fry up with the oil. I think it would be a great thing for them to try feeding themselves with.

Maybe try using just the egg yolks instead of the whole egg in the recipe.  If you need more volume you could try 2 egg yolks instead of just one.
