Do some ebf babies just hate the bottle forever?
« on: February 23, 2007, 17:09:38 pm »
Mackenzie's been ebf since birth. We did everything "right..." intro'd the bottle around 3 wks, gave her a bottle of ebm 2-3x per week, etc. She did great from the start and took it with no trouble. Then, around 3 mo, she decided to refuse it and scream instead. I wasn't home, so she ended up going 6 hrs until the boobie got home. Mind you, she was only going 3 hrs at night at the time. ::) So I pumped and gave bottles exclusively for a couple of days and that fixed her. Until now. She's 4 mo and it's happening again. Despite having several bottles over the weekend (more than usual) and taking them with no problem, she starting refusing and screaming instead yesterday. I tried again today and same thing.

I've tried just about every tip/technique out there. She usually doesn't like taking the bottle from DH (I'm guessing because he's been out of town a lot lately) but does give in eventually without much fuss. She always takes it better from me, but I'm at a loss. Do some babies just never really take to the bottle, no matter what you try? I work part time on the weekends and I don't want my boobies to be on a short leash for the next 8 mo!

I'm guessing that some just don't like the bottle as much.  I know I had a friend who's baby never would take a bottle, but I'm not really sure how hard she actually tried to introduce it.  Sounds like you are really putting a lot of effort into it.

My only other thought is that maybe in another couple months when you start solids so she's eating in other ways besides your breast, she'll get over it, if she hasn't by then.  I know that's a ways away, but at least it wouldn't mean 8 more months of this.

Hugs--so frustrating when you do everything "right" and they just don't do their part ;)

I think it really depends on the kid - I'm doing one bottle a day in the hopes that I won't run into trouble, but some nights she still gives me a run for my money.  I've had to hold her in one arm, bouncing around the living room while giving her a bottle some nights!  Lately, she likes being in the bouncy chair watching the TV... UH!  What we go through!! Just think - we get to embarass them on their wedding day with these stories...  ;)

Tylersmommy, I know excatly how you feel. My DD also decided she wasn't going to take the bottle anymore at 12wks after taking it from about 2wks old. I was using the Avent type (not sure if you know of these) and she just flat out refused. So I kept trying different brands and types and finally she liked the tommee tippee " Closer to Nature range " Here is the link http://www.tommeetippee.com.au/closertonature/tt-ctn-bottlefeeding.htm good luck and hope things work out.  ;)

I ran into the same problem. DS#1 refused to take a bottle until almost 6 months. Then the only person who could give it to him was me, I actually had to leave a wedding reception once to feed him. Eventually he got over it. Mind you now that I think of it. It was when we started solids. Sounds like you're doing a great job hang in there, it should work itself out with time.  :)

My lo refused a bottle point blank until she was fully weaned (13 months or so)  ... and we tried EVERYTHING, every method every bit of equipment.
