Less a time when LO is more active???
« on: October 14, 2013, 17:31:34 pm »
My LO is quite active now.
She has been getting major OT naps - but I haven't increased A time!  Should I decrease A time?  She is almost 9 months and was at 3 hr 15 min A time.  She is waking 30 mins in - crying hysterically...

Pain from teething? I would've thought 3:15 was pretty short A time wise for this age.

Could be teething or the beginning of a cold or other illness?
A time looks okay to me but being more physical or having more stimulation could well make a LO OT.  Whether illness, teeth or OS/OT I'd prob do an early nap or early bed to see if you can get her caught up then return to your normal routine.

Just to cause a whole lot of confusion, mine often woke screaming early from an UT nap and it indicated the need for a longer A.

Thanks.  How did you figure it out that it was UT and not OT?  We did a 6pm bedtime tonight so I hope that helps.  Usually does just that DH doesn't get as much time with her so it's not ideal...

Well, it was a BW mummy that suggested it.  Everything looked like OT but none of the methods to overcome OT were helping (ie shorter A, EBT, I was trying to W2S naps to extend etc).  Generally an UT nap would be a happy wake up, chatty, playful, but mine was screaming blue murder. It was because his A was too short for him but he was still going down for the nap, then waking early (not tired enough to transition even with help) but because it was a short nap he was still tired.  Really there isn't a clear way of knowing other than if shorter As and EBT don't help then try the other way!  I actually prefer an OT nap because I found it easier to get him back to sleep so ultimately he gets more sleep than a short UT nap when he won't go back to sleep.
Your current A is within the guidance times for age although as bec said might be short (depends on high or low sleep needs too), at 10 months some are on 4hr or more A time (possibly not all As being equal length depending what suits).
What you said in your original post though about more activity, that does make them more tired depends how much activity and stimulation she can take.

Sorry - it isn't a clear cut answer is it.  If you try ebt a couple of days and don't get anywhere then try a longer A time, increase by 15 mins, hold a couple of days then increase again if needed.  Watch her mood prior to the nap too, she might be happy with the extra play time.

Ok EBT helped last night but yesterday was weird.
Wu -6
Nap - 9:15-9:45
Nap - 12-1:45 (woke for a couple minutes at 12:30)

Bedtime 6 (woke at 9 for a minute, settled and woke at 5 for a minute, settled and slept til 6:30).

It was a long a time in the afternoon - do you think that indicates the need for longer a times?  Thanks,  she just seems so fussy around 3 hrs.

1hr 10 min.  But the first time she woke up happy in a long time!  Thanks for the help - we shall see how he pm nap goes.  I'm pretty sure she will be a short napper since she sleeps 12 to 13 hrs at night.

She didn't show any sleepy signs until 3 hr50 mins and she fought her pm nap and only slept for 30 mins and has been pretty miserable ever since...  I feel like she only randomly naps well - I cannot get consistent naps.
