To Freeze or not to freeze?
« on: September 16, 2006, 11:20:44 am »
Are there any foods that can not be frozen when making your own baby food?

How long can food last in the fridge?

Thanks.

Bananas can't be frozen.

I usually use up any babyfood in the fridge in 3 days.
The cookbook I'm using says you can leave homemade babyfood in the freezer for upto 6 weeks.

This website maybe able to give you more info about how long to leave in the fridge or freezer:

potatos don't freeze well either  :(

I think to ensure the nutrition of the food is fully retained in the freezer you should use within 1 month, but it's still completely edible after 6-8 weeks and probably beyond.

I found this on the site....

December 2005 - Freezing Banana & Avocado

Myth: You can't freeze Bananas and/or Avocados

Truth: We are unsure where this myth originated however we suspect it may
be perpetuated by parents who have had their banana and/or avocado turn
brown when frozen. There is no health/nutritional reason for not freezing
bananas and/or avocados.

True, they may turn brown however this browning is natural and unless you began with brown and rotting fruit, the browning is not indicative of rot. Browning is the natural process that occurs as many fruits oxidize and ripen.

We always freeze avocado and banana mixed together. It is one of DS favorites. They will not have a chance to turn brown if they are frozen right away or put in a air tight container to eat the same or next day. I never tried any of the 2 on thier own. I believe anything can be frozen, although the texture may change.
