How to wean?
« on: December 30, 2013, 20:42:41 pm »
Ladies, I'd like to wean my baby onto formula during the day while sticking to breastfeeding at night time only.

When is the best time of the day to introduce formula etc? I don have a pump so will need to be careful I don't get engorged.

Thanks x

How old is your lo? I did mixed feeding wth DD1 & DD2 and at first they had formula at bedtime with DH and then I slowly dropped feeds starting from the morning feed. My supply adjusted fine, I dont remember being too engorged (they were between 5-7 months while we did this).

Thanks for your reply. She's 10 weeks. She dosent go long between feeds, she likes to snack little and often so we could feed every hour if you know what I mean. Just not sure how to start without me getting sore.

Have a read of this weaning FAQ and see which approach you think would work best for you. Weaning let us know if you have any questions about it.

If you do get sore you can just hand express enough to relieve the discomfort.

Hi, I just had a quick look there and it's the mother led weaning approach I'd like to follow. I don't want to drop a feed day by day just yet. Maybe start with o e bottle a day for a week or two if you know what I mean.

I am  not sure what's the best time of the day to introduce it?
Morning time I fill up quit quickly so maybe the second feed of the day? I seem. To have a slight dip in my supple at this time. . ? Thanks x

I did it different each time...with DD1 the morning feed was last to go and with DD2 the DF was...did it so so slowly it was not a huge issue for engorgement and like Ali says a bit of hand expressing can relieve some of that.  With other kids in the mix would having the first feed be a bottle (that say a sibling could help with) make things easier on you?

Sometimes you just need to bear it until the supply adjusts. Some ladies find standing under a hot shower is enough to get the milk flowing and relieve the engorgement. Then a cold compress can help afterwards. Ideally you don't want to be pumping or expressing at all so your body gets the message that it does not need to make the milk.
