is she ready for 1 nap a day?
« on: November 20, 2005, 18:27:53 pm »
ok, here is our usual routine:

6:00 wake
9:00 down for 1 hour 15 mins
2:00 down for 1 hour 15 mins
7:30 bed

but for the past week, the am nap has been only 30 mins.   :?  she wakes up happy.  should i try increasing the awake times to produce a longer nap?  or do you think she is ready to move to one nap a day?  the only thing if i give her longer awake times is that then bedtime will have to move later and i don't think she'll get enough night sleep that way.

i am terrified to make the transition, i don't know why.  i guess cause i have no idea what i am doing and i am afraid i will ruin my great sleeper by messing with her routine.  any suggestions would be appreciated.  thanks!

Lindsey-

Around that time, a lot of babies start getting ready for the transition to 1 nap, but aren't quite ready to make the transition. If she's happy with a shorter AM nap, and is still going down easily for the PM nap, I'd go with it for now. Increasing her awake time in the morning will only push the rest of her day later, like you said, and will only help if you are in fact working toward eliminating the PM nap.

When Tyler was about that age, he was getting tough to put down, so I tried transitioning him to 1 nap. It failed miserably, he just wasn't ready for that much awake time yet. We went back to 2 naps, but they were always short naps...never more than 30 min for the AM one, and rarely more than 45 min for the PM one. It stayed that way until he just wouldn't take a morning nap anymore at 13 mo, and the transition to 1 nap was pretty easy.

If she's happy, I wouldn't worry too much about tinkering with her routine just yet! :D

Dd did this at about 11 months too, well she actually started to cut back on her afternoon nap so I cut back on her morning nap til it reached half an hour and she was happy with it. She eventually cut it out at about 12.5 months and we just moved her lunchtime nap to 1pm. Sometimes mornings are still a bit tricky so lots of distraction and walks are needed. It takes them a while to get used to it
