Only mom can feed
« on: August 02, 2006, 13:08:54 pm »
Hi there

4 mth DS is breastfeed and takes a bottle for bed time and dreamfeed daily. Occasionally I give him a bottle during the day when we are out. The problem is I am the only one that he would take the bottle from. He would cry and cry until I hold him and when I give the bottle he would take the feed.

Just wondering if anyone had experience anything similiar and what helped.

Thanks
Loanne

If your baby does not take to a bottle you could try the following:
Get someone else to offer the bottle
Offer it at a time when your baby is neither starving hungry nor completely full
Feed your baby somewhere apart from where you usually sit, so that he does not assume that he will be getting a breastfeed
Offer the bottle in the dark, so he cannot see it
Warm the teat before offering it to him
Try different brands of teat
If he is old enough, (five or six months) use a spouted beaker rather than a bottle
If he is on solids, add breast milk or formula to his food so that he gets the goodness via another route

Hi Calums Mum,

DS would take the bottle, the problem is he would only takes it from me. No one, not even his dad can offer him the bottle. When someone else try to feed him, he would cry and cry.  Which kind of defeat the purpose of putting him on the bottle so I can have a life :-\

I have been trying at the 10:30 or 2:30 feed, where he is due for a feed, but not too tired. My sister is the only one with the occasional success....kinda. He would take the bottle offered by her for only about 20ml and then cried.  ::)

was hoping that someone had any creative tips???

I cannot offer you any advice, but only to let you know that you are not alone.

DS was completely bottle fed, but at around 4months of age also went through a phase where no one could feed him but me.  He was so used to me giving him his bottle, that when I needed a break or DP wanted to feed him he would not take it.

Funnily enough, he can still be like that now and he is 1.

Hope things improve for you.

Hugs
