Hungry baby milk leads to constipation??
« on: July 30, 2010, 06:54:03 am »
Hi everyone

my health visitor told me that the hungry baby milks can cause constipation. Has anyone found this to be the case? I'm thinking about moving 17 wo DS on to the aptimil hungry baby milk from the first milk as he is starting to max out on the amount of milk I can give him (7oz every 4 hours and no DF-so 28oz in total, and on his current feeding schedule can only go up to 32oz max!). Thought putting him on the hungry baby milk might hold him off a bit until he is ready to start weaning.

If they do get constipated what can you do to help?

Thanks!!

It can be constipating as it is harder to digest but my ds had no problems with hungry milk.  He was on it from around 14 weeks.  If he gets constipated offer a little cool boiled water and bicycle his les and that should help.  You could also offer more than 7oz per feed - at times my dd would take up to 12oz in one sitting but normally only at her evening feed during a growth spurt.

personally i would increase bottles before using hungry baby as it is a lot more difficult to digest. there is no reason to keep him on 7 oz bottles if he is drinking it all you need to increase the size of the feeds.       Laura

Great thanks very much.

This is probably a stupid question but how do you give them a larger bottle, like up to 12oz?! The bottles I have only go up to 9oz- can you buy bigger bottles or do you just use 2 bottles?

Also how much milk would they possibly be drinking before you decide they need more than just milk? I know there are lots of factors which determine whether they are ready for weaning, but I was wondering if there was a maximum amount of milk they should drink.

Thanks!!

I think i would only use hungry baby if they were not lasting 3 hours on a full feed and waking more than 2 x a night for food when they had been sleeping better. i am on holiday now & posting on phone but if u can hang on will b back Sunday eve so will post more then!

So, how are things going? Did you increase the size of feeds? What is your EASY like now?

Hi Laura

yes he is now having up to 8oz 4 times a day and he is lasting 4 hours between feeds so it seems to be working well. I've actually posted about our EASY, it is going ok but he is waking up a little early which is throwing off the rest of the day! Also we are on holiday at the moment so our days are a bit out what with going out of the day etc.
