when to introduce just a sandwich?
« on: August 02, 2007, 11:31:07 am »
My 18 month old twins at the moment have quite a big breakfast, with a proper meal at lunch as well as at tea.  Some people have said to me in the past that there toddlers just have a sandwich at lunch and a proper meal at tea time or visa versa.  Should I be thinking of this and if so when should the sandwich and nibbley bit be given at lunch or tea time?

My son usually has a sandwich and salad and fruit at lunch time.. like a packed lunch.. and his cooked meal at night. I started that at about 18 months when he was confident to finger feed himself.

There is no right or wrong with all of this.. if your LO likes to finger feed and have a sandwich then it could be given at lunch time or tea time or whenever you choose.. so long as over the course of the day / week the diet is balanced and your LO has enough to eat its really up to you!

I agree it really is what works best for you. My dd started having sandwhiches at around 18 months. At first this was given as a snack. I would give her just a small amount instead of a full sandwich with a little fruit around 10am. I would then give a little less for lunch at 1pm. This worked well and got her used to it. At around 2 I replaced her lunch with sandwiches, fruit and a yogurt. Then at her morning snack she would have crackers with soft cheese and fruit for example instead of the sandwich.

i introduced sandwiches with dd1 about 18-2o months .she couldnt hold the whole sandwich though without it falling apart so i used to cut them into bite sized pieces at first.

My 10 month old has sandwiches and fruit for lunch - the sandwiches are cut into squares or fingers and he is really good at feeding them to himself.  He has his main hot meal at dinner time.

my 16.5 mth old will eat a sandwhich when we're out, but strangely not at home  ::) :P I usually mix cream cottage cheese spread with other things like grated carrot, cucumber, ham (this one is only recent), at least this way they are pastey and stick together better.

I don't think there's a specific time, it's really whatever works and what they will eat  ;D
