Moving to a big bed help!!!!!(warning long)
« on: February 13, 2007, 19:59:06 pm »
Moving Sasha to a big bed was not out of choice!!!!(i'm already dealing with 2nd year molars!!)over the weekend we had some particularly spectacular houdini escapes from the cot.well should say attempts as fortunately we caught her in time :o :o.
me and DH thought as she sleeps in a sleep sac normally we didn't want to risk DD badly injuring herself if she finally managed to get out of the cot so agreed to transition her to a big bed.
shes had a toddler bed in her room for a little while and often gets in and "pretend sleeps"-LOL.
yesterday i just did a nap in the bed-she slept fine.
today i did a nap in the bed and again she slept fine!
tonight i put her in the bed (actually she put herself in the bed!!),did our normal bedtime routine etc.it took 45 mins for her to go to sleep.i had to go in 3 times to put her back in,then say night night, walk out.
i know this is normal as shes worked out she can get out of the bed easily ::).but why are her naps fine and bedtime not???
is this just a consistency thing?
any ideas???
TIA for reading all this!!

I don't have much advice, but we moved H a little while ago. I did not have the option of letting him try the bed first was was really nervous. Like you, I kept to the routine  and he has settled well (touch wood!)
The only reason I can think for her naps being fine is she is more tired then than at bedtime ?? So is less likely to come out ??

Hi Andrea,

First, take a deep breath!!!  It has only been a day or so that you have transitioned her.  It took one or two naps and a night before Tyler settled in his big boy bed.  We also had to go in a few times to tell him "Time for nigh nigh" and put him in his bed.  Just be sure to keep the routine the same as when she was in her crib.

I will write more later.  I do not hear Tyler in the other room which means he has gotten into trouble.  Good luck.

DH and I are REALLY suprised that she doesn't attempt to get out.mind you its pitch black in her room 8)

tonight went much better.i didn't do the sleep sac as i was worried she'd get too hot.she gave out a few mantra cries once i went downstairs but nothing that needed me to go up to her room.PHEW!!

Once she DOES get out of bed, you will find that 9 times out of 10 she will get back in and go to sleep.  Many times we hear Tyler in his room walking around and when we go check on him (when it gets silence) he is back in his bed, fast asleep.

The novelty of being able to get out and about will wear out.

Sounds like she is doing great!

Andrea,

What does she do when she wakes up?  Does she come out of her room into yours?  If she is just wandering around her dark room.  I would leave her be.  Just be sure to take out anything she can hurt herself or tip over onto herself.

During the first week or so, Tyler would get up and walk around his room and fall asleep on the floor many times.  I would just go in and put him into his bed.

Good Luck.

unfortunately she doesn't do that.if she was just wandering around in her room i wouldn't go in.
she normally cries out.i don't go in straight away but it tends to escalate.when you go in shes still in bed (just about!!) so i put her back in etc then walk out.
tonight was slightly different when i put her to bed.she has a box of soft toys by her bed and she picked 2-3 toys and put them in her bed.maybe that made a difference.

I have a ridiculously stu*id question - how tall is Sasha? Isabella is supposed to be taller than the av 2yos but she hasn't yet manager to climb out of the cot. How do they do it? Do they jump up and throw the leg over or something  :-\. She can definitely climb over if the bar is down but its up at night.... so is it the height thing? I am just asking because I want to get an idea of when I should be preparing for the switch (mind you I am completely terrified of it).

Told you it was a silly thing to ask but just curious  ;D

Layla

Ps - hope Sasha is feeling better soon

Sasha is quite tall for her age (mind you haven't measured her recently).she is probably as tall as most 2.5yr olds if not more, so people tend to think shes a bit older than she is!!!
i'm not sure if its  case of how tall they are just how determined they are to get out!!!
Judy
she seems a bit better to day just tired (actually managed to get her down for 2 naps!!!) and the Dr said it gets a lot better after 48hrs ;D ;D.she'll be back to her normal self in no time!!

Layla,

I don't think height has a lot to do with when they start jumping out of their crib (it helps, of course).  However, I think it might have more to do with a child's temperament??  Please, anybody,  correct me if I am wrong.

Tyler is average height and started climbing out of his crib between 17-18 months.  He has many friends who are much taller, much older who still stay peacefully in their crib.  ;)

HTH.

Hola,

Can I just ask a quick question about transitioning to a bed? Is there a right/wrong/average age to transition?

The reason I ask is that Riley is 19 months and so far has shown no sign of trying to climb out of her cot. She's big for her age and when she sleeps sideways in the cot her feet often end up between the bars. She also moves around all over the place during the night and I'm afraid she'll be constantly falling out of a big bed!

Hi Soph,

If she is not attempting to jump out, I would keep her in the crib for now!

I don't think there is a right or wrong age.  It depends on the child.

i agree with Judy ;D ;D.if sasha hadn't attempted to get out of her cot i would have kept her in there till she was 21-LOL.
she also moved a lot around in her cot so i've put a bed rail on her bed for now.

sasha has developed her own self soothing!!!when she wakes at night she turns on her music!shes had since birth a cot attachment that plays music and projects teddies going round and round on her ceiling.she keeps turning it on till she goes back to sleep.i don't even have to get out of bed ;D ;D ;D

Andrea!!! THAT IS WONDERFUL!!!  Don't you love hearing them do that?!?!?  It is so cute.  Tyler has a stuffed frog called TAD from the brand Leap Frog that he will play in the middle of the night if he is bored or wakes up!!
