When is chilli okay?
« on: May 22, 2009, 19:59:55 pm »
I was just making a baby chilli-con-carne-minus-the-chilli and started wondering....when is chilli ok?

I'm already using teeny tiny amounts of garlic and all the herbs we eat.

What do you do?

TIA

I think if babe has had all the main ingredients (like the meats/corn/tomato or whatever you put in it) in it already and was fine with them all - have at it!

...its what you do when you get back up.

when is chilli ok?

When he stops making a funny face and clawing his tongue after having a taste of it.  ;p

Seriously you could give him a very very mild taste of it to see how he will react.  DS had his first taste of hot chili (Thai green chili) at around 10 mos.  He did ok.  Didn't cry or anything just couldn't stop wiping his tongue with his hands as he tried to get the heat off.  One thing I learned is to have some milk available to neutralize the chili burn (heat) in the mouth.  Water is not a good neutralizer.

Yeh, go for it. Stan loves (mildly) spicy foods and has done since about 9 months.

Thanks ladies.  We've already done very mild curry, but one of my baby food books advises not to feed chillis at all.  That said, I've got three baby food books and all of 'em give conflicting advice at some point!

I'll experiment with a tiny bit of red chilli (enough for taste, but not enough for proper heat iykwim).   And some milk on the side.  Mimi, that's a really good idea - thanks!
