Title: Milk for 10 mth old recovering MPI
Post by: timmysmommy on February 17, 2011, 17:54:29 pm
Hi everyone!  I need some help!  My lo has trouble with dairy.  I just found out I was pregnant and my supply has started to drop.  I am worried that he isn't getting enough milk.  He is already 10 months, and here in the us they recommend bf for a year then switch to cows milk. I was thinking about nursing him a little longer if he is still reacting to dairy, but that may not be an option now if my milk dries up.  What else could he drink?  I'm hesitant to try soy as I am not confident that loads of soy is good for anyone.  I really appreciate any help you can provide.

Big hugs to all you dealing with reflux babies!  It is awful, but it does get better- I promise!

Soy is not reccomended for boys anyway because being plant based it contains estrogen

Theres hypoallergenic formulas but they are expensive

Other options to cows milk is rice or oat milks but again its not reccomended till 12 months atleast

I was drinking almond milk and really liked it. Some types have a bit of soy but if you're looking for something for you for cereal, there's always that.

Not sure what milk you should try, but I just wanted to say keep trying to BF.  I think it isn't until the second trimester that milk really starts to go, and I was able to keep nursing T for at least 2mos into my pregnancy.

In the meantime, what about asking his doctor first?

This thread might have some useful information, although I'm not sure exactly what is appropriate before 12mos.

Hi Amy, there are plenty of milks out there that can be alternatives to cow's milk. As you know though until 12 months milk cannot really be replaced by these milks alone. I guess you would need to try something like Nutramigen or Neocate although whether Timmy would take it now at 10 months is a hard one  :-\

I am no expert on BFing whilst pregnant but meanwhile maybe try and add as much milk (rice/oat/hemp etc) into his diet in other forms. At 10 months we dropped to 3 feeds and I gave oat milk in porridge and then a sippy at snacks.

Do you think you will be able to manage some BFs a day until Timmy is nearer 12 months old?

Thanks ladies!  I am planning to nurse as long as I can.  T loves to nurse and I actually think he is going to be tough to wean.  My worry is that he is so small, I am always afraid he isn't getting enough.  I think he is more comfort nursing than anything else now that I think about it.  He wants to nurse all day long, but doesn't suck hard and I'm not feeling a letdown.  I am trying to plan ahead for the possibility of my milk drying up and dairy still bothering him.  I need to look at the products out there.  Months ago when I was on my Ed, I was avoiding everything, so there were things in the rice and almond milk I was staying away from, but they will probably be fine.  I have to try coconut milk again too.

Sorry, just clued in that you were asking for him, not you.

I've heard rice and oat milk used the most. Soy kinda creeps me out too. I've heard but not been able to find that Alimentum (hypoallergenic formula) makes a toddler friendly vanilla formula. Worth checking in to.

At 10 months I was still BF but also started to give fortified rice milk as an extra drink so that at 12 months I could change over, the only thing I would say though is that the rice milk was quite constipating to my dd though I would always choose it over soy milk like pp have said.

My DD is MPI, we have switched to Hemp milk this week, as she is 3 weeks away from 1 now and I wanted to start the transition. She is handling Hemp milk just wonderful! It's suppose to be great for little ones. Lots of omega 3 fats and protein in it. I researched this alot, and found it to be the best alternative to soy.  lShe has been on soy formula since she was 5 months old, and I really didn't want to keep her on soy after all the horrible research I found on it!

That sounds like a good idea, that wasn't around here when Leorah was drinking milk, not sure if it is now but I think I would have chosen it over rice milk if they fortify it with calcium.
