Dried fruits as finger food?
« on: October 10, 2006, 13:05:27 pm »
hi there
just wondered if anyone had tried dried fruits as finger food? dd is not keen on the feel of fresh fruit on her fingers (wet & slimey) so I wondered if something like dried prunes or apricots might be worth a try. I haven't tried them myself so don't know whether they would pass the mush test. Can anyone advise me?

Many dried fruits contain extra sugars.  This is particular true for dried fruits such as mangos, apples and pineapple.  They are also very spongy in texture, much like soft candies such as gummy bears.  For that reason, they can be a choking hazard, despite cutting them into little bits and mushing them and I have hesitated giving them to my LO.

Loads of sugar in dried fruit..
I would try taking your pieces of fresh fruit, cut up and rolled in crushed cheerios or cornflakes or something so she can't feel the "slimy" texture if that is what your lo doesn't like.

Also with dried fruit they tend to be sticky and are a big choking hazard.

Try freeze drying your fruit yourself, there is no added sugers and its not sticky.

Gerbers now make freeze dried fruits and corn in bags, and it is basically the only kind of fruit ds will eat (and he's 2 1/2! :o)

They have nothing extra added - no added sugar, no preservatives, no food coloring, nothing....

The kinds they have that we have found are:
Corn
Apples&Strawberries
Apples
Apples& Banana's
Mango's

He loves them, they're not sticky - they just dissolve in their mouths, and he eats them like a snack....PERFECT for in teh car or on the go!

I love those gerber snacks..M likes likes the apples. In canada we only seem to have strawberry/banana (she can't have that yet-too chicken of strawberry) and apples.
She loves Mango..want to ship me some LOL

FYI...those toddler (tv dinners) are DISGUSTING :)

Lola I'm in Canada and we have strawberry banana, Apple, and corn. Keep an eye out :)

Although they are prett pricey, its cheaper to make your own if you can.

She's had the corn (sorry, forgot that one) and I just see it in the diaper  :)

I gave her strawberry applesauce the other day and immediately she got a red blotch on her face. However, I have given her field berry yogurt before with no problems so now I don't know what to do ??:)
I was going to pick out the banana ones but I guess they are mixed in with the strawberries.

We have some of the fruit puffs here now too...they are AMAZING. She lvoes the sweet potato puffs. (me too LOL)

How the heck do you freeze dry fruit to get it all puffy and melt in your mouth?

Cut the fruit into small pieces and place it on a plate. Put the plate in the freezer uncovered, remove when froozen.

You don't sound dumb at all.. I asked the same thing ;D

Leave it in there for a day or 2 and it should dry out. My Dad told me how to do it. So far its worked for me. Keep experimenting with small amounts untill you figure out the right time for it in your freezer. Just make sure the food is NOT in a bag or container sealed or it wont work.
