What can a five month eat that is not sweet...?
« on: October 11, 2006, 01:17:48 am »
Well, I started my LO on solids a few weeks ago. He has had rice cereal, oatmeal, sweet potato, and avocado.  He does not seem to like avocado very much since he holds it in his mouth, but at the end he swallows it.  I think he may like the sweet stuff better.  Is there anything else that I can safely give him at this age that is not sweet?  The Super Baby food says that the rest of allowable things are fruits, and you all know that is sweet.  THanks

Is there a particular reason you are avoiding sweet foods? I see that your ds takes EBM, breast milk is sweet so there isn't harm in giving him sweet fruit, he will not turn off from veggies and other foods later on if that's your concern. At the same time, I would try to hold off from introducing too many new foods at his age, especially if he holds avocado in his mouth for a while before swallowing. Once you do decide to move forward with additional foods I would suggest banana (mushed) and/or apple (wash, peel, steam before you process to mush) as 2 good simple fruits to start with.

Well, I was just concerned that in the future he would not eat anything that is not sweet.  I also was trying to introduce another item that was not sweet and then work with that until he is 6 months old when I can introduce more things.  I want to give him another non-sweet alternative so that he does not tired of avocado

What about pumpkin?

And it also combines well with sweet potato for a meal that is "somewhere in the middle"

If you don't want the fruit puree to be too sweet why don't you mix with baby rice to dilute the sweetness.  Baby will still get the goodness.  At five months you could also start introducing vege puree; sweetpotatoe, courgette, swede, carrot, broccoli and my son's favourite green bean puree with some baby rice (sounds awful !) but it's a good way to get a taste of veg.

Try mixing the veg with baby rice and other veg i.e.  1 cube sweetpotatoe puree, 1 cube courgette and some baby rice. or swede and carrot with baby rice.

Enjoy !   Toni

My 2 year old started off like that - sweet potato, avocado, apples, pears, loved carrot and parsnip - and now eats almost everything under the sun from olives to porridge to salami to pomegranate. So don't worry!

The previous posters have some good suggestions for veggies to start with. But honestly, don't be worried about him only taking to sweet items when you introduce fruits as breast milk is sweet. My dd had a slight preference for the sweet fruits when she was 7 mths but now at 11 mths she loves everything.

Thanks for everyones input.  It is reasurring to know that your LOs like all sorts of foods.  I have bought butternut squash, pumpkin, apple and I will try it soon.  Of course, I will prepare it and introduce them slowly.
