Awake times
« on: March 18, 2006, 12:13:47 pm »
How long should a baby's awake time be between day naps?

Can some one give me the average time for babies 6 - 12 months old

I am totally confused by my DS whom is 6 months old. Some days he can only stay awake for about a hour, then other days he can stay awake for two.

His signs are very hard to read as he doesn't yawn, he will either rub his eyes very frantically or start to moan, normally by then is to late cause he just ends up crying for up to 20Min's before he will settle (I never leave him till he is calm).

I now feel that this is why I have the problem of him waking every two and a half hours during the night.

My DS is a 30min napper. - We have tried PU/PD but it never worked for me.

My dd is 7 months old and her awake times tend to extend as the day goes on.  At the moment she is managing awake times of 2 hours, 3 hours and 3.5 hours as the days goes on.

From what I can gather (from this site and observing my dd) 6 months is a massive period of change for babies.  They are going through a lot - teething, solids, etc.

My dd has up until now been a fantastic nightime sleeper with no nightwakings and we are now up in the night with her - her teeth her driving her insane - do you think your lo may be teething too?

hi,

6-12 months is a very large range to specify awake times.  Are you trying to get your lo to have 2 naps or 3?  Your lo is likely waking in the night because they are overtired due to the 30 minute naps.  Have you tried other means of extending?  I would suggest wake to sleep where you go in at the 25 min. mark and lay your hand on your DS to prevent him from jolting awake.

He should certainly be able to stay up longer than 1 hour.  Is this normally the first Awake period?  Try to extend it very gradually if he's sensitive to it...5 minutes every few days.  It's a bit of a vicious circle, he's likely tired because of the bad nights and can't stay asleep while napping, thus resulting in bad nights!  It's very important to improve his day sleep to get back to normal nights.

good luck

My DD extending her awake time at 5 months when she dropped her cat nap so only on 2 naps a day.
Like Mias Mom Catherine can also handle longer awake time as the day goes on. At the moment it is 2.5hrs.3hrs,3.5hrs but it looks like the first one is extending to 3hrs.

Two hours (6 mo) almost to the minute. Can't extend it and don't really want to either cause I don't know why I shouldn't tuck him in if he is tired...
