HI Nic - I think finger foods isnt' until 9months if you go by the 'books' or what the govt tell you.  Mainly due to choking.  I know that some do it sooner, and as I am a first time mum I can only offer advice of what I've read!  I'm sure you will get some experienced mum's who remember!

If you use 'baby led weaning' which plenty of people do from 6 months you can offer finger foods straight away. With baby led weaning you may not use a puree stage at all.

Sam had small rice cakes from 6 months and then moved onto soft cooked vegetables and steamed fruit.

I think it depends on a few things - your confidence and your baby's fine motor skills and coordination.

I've not heard of an official recommendation to wait until a particular age - maybe we just don't get it in the UK.

We did closer to what babycenter.com described with Noah, but with Evie we did more what Emma mentions here.  I just didn't know it had a name. ;) :)
We started Evie with Cheerios when she was 6 months along with her other first solids.  I felt confident doing this (after I brushed up on my choking first aid :o :)) because she had the interest, the head control and the fine motor skills.  I figured, if she can pick it up and put it in her mouth so well, she might just be ready for it. :)
Here's what babycenter.com has to say about infant first aid and choking. ;)

I am keen to do baby led weaning but Lilly still can't sit up unaided and doesn't have the motor skills.  I'm just doing bfast for taste.  She's great with a sippy cup though - really weird the way they can do somethings and not other.

The info re: 9months was from our govt community health centre talk - mind you, I htink I knew more about the whole thing than what the lady did.  NIc, as we are both from Aus, hence the info.  There is so much info out ther on solids, and different ways to do it.  I think the main thing is if they are ready, go for it, just beware choking, and if you have allergies in the fam then also mind what you give them.  tha'ts what I'm doing anyway... I'm taking it slow with Lilly as she was real interested at first, but gets a little bored in the chair, so just doing tastes every am. Then I'm going to progress to dinner and then when she can do finger foods add lunch so there is variety.

here's the link to the Aus govt site... http://www.health.qld.gov.au/cchs/nutrition_feeding.asp

I recently started my 9 month old on cheerios, peas, sauteed carrots, corn and sometimes pieces of cheese and grilled cheese. He is doing fine EATTING it. But actually getting it TO his mouth is a different story. He thinks he has it in his mouth, when all along, it's still in his hand. So he drops it. Very frustrating for him, so I end up feeding him with my own fingers. He has no patience (gets it from me, of course!) so he doesn't know how to do much with holding small things in his fingers.
