Title: Nipple Speed
Post by: Kimberly® on September 20, 2005, 13:06:22 pm
I'm useing the Platex Nurser bottles with the drop in liners. Sometimes it looks like my dd is having trouble getting formula out. She sometimes seems to tired to try and get more out.
Right now the nipples I have are slow flow. The ones that came with the bottles. The formula drips out several drops per minute.
What I would like to know is when do I switch to the fast flow? Would that maybe help her eat better?
I don't want to switch to early but I don't want her being to tired to eat either.
What do you guys think?

At 3 weeks, I would think the slow flow would still be appropriate.  I used the playtex nursers, and ds was a couple of months old when we switched to the next flow.

BUT - every baby is different.  You could always buy one pack of the medium flow, and try it.  The concern is that you don't want to choke/flood them with milk, but if your lo does ok with it, go for it!

If not, you're not out anything, as you'll have to buy them eventually!

Sometimes when you've screwed the cap on the bottle too tightly the baby has trouble getting the formula out.  I found that loosening the cap just a bit makes the formula flow out more freely.

Are you using powdered formula? If so I found that the powder tends to stop up the nipple quite frequently. Do you swirl the bottle and then give it a few good shakes?? Also, make sure it is coming out before you give it to your LO by squeezing the liner at the bottom first. Sometimes after they have sucked on it for a bit it gets clogged up again!
I wouldn't recommend the faster flow nipples yet. My DD is only almost 5 months and I still have her on the slow flow as the fast flow just makes the milk pour out of her mouth! I think they say you can switch around 6 months or so??
Good Luck!

I use the Gerber (newer ones) bottles with the triangular shape bottle. I'm using the medium flow (2 drip flow) and it works amazingly for my 4 month old. The slow flow was making him frustrated...yes, he can be a piggy.. hehe

The Avent ones, I was using the Step 3, but found them to be too fast, plus my son didn't like the nipples. So I'm not using them now...thankfully I didn't buy those bottles (shower gift)!! Man..the nipples are expensive!
