Hi everyone
I want to try making some pancakes for my 7.5month DD but have no idea on the ingredients. Any suggestions?
thx
-
ohh I'd love a good recipe as well.
-
I make pancakes for my LO, but even though he is 11 months, he can't eat dairy or eggs. He can't eat wheat at the moment either, but that is a whole other issue. Anyway, I used Hodgkin Mills (sp?) whole wheat pancake mix and just mixed in pureed fruit and water. The pancakes still came out fluffy and weren't as dry as regular pancakes, so my LO could just eat them plain.

I am from Toronto and I don't recall seeing Hodgkin Mills. ???

Wow, you can make pancakes for a 7.5mo? That's so neat!! I can't wait to try it...

There's a recipe on the neocate website for pancakes made with formula. I tried it with soy formula (ds is mpi) and it worked great!
-
Yes, I have done that pancake recipe form Neocate as well. It's 3/4 cup of rice flour and 3 ounces of formula (I think) with 1/4 teaspoon of baking powder (make your own if gluten is an issue).
BUT I tried to do it with the amount of formula they suggested and it is IMPOSSIBLE! (Did you find that Vikki?) I use 1/4 cup of rice flour and about 3ish ounces of formula. I just add the formula little by little and stir until it is a decent batter. Then I add 1/4 teaspoon of baking powder, a tiny spoonful of brown sugar and a sprinkling of cinnamon. I find the first two that I make are a waste because they soak too much oil from the frying pan, but as the pan gets hotter they turn out better. I make them 1 - 2 inches in diameter and DS eats at them all day - bkfst, snacks, etc. I try to do them once per week.
I do sometimes tear them up into small bites and add them to pureed fruit - makes it nice and lumpy which he likes and good way to get some extra fruit (and formula!) into him!

Here's one I got from Sprout Right, it's a healthy recipe. Haven't tried it yet, was going to this weekend so I'll let you know how it is!!
Finger Food Pancakes
1 cup brown rice flour
¼ cup potato starch
¼ cup tapioca starch
2 tsp baking powder
1 tbsp Chia powder (Salba)
1 egg yolk
1-1 ¼ cups vanilla rice milk or unsweetened almond milk
2½ tbsp agave syrup
3 tbsp sunflower oil
*Egg free option: mix 3 tbsp water with 1 tbsp ground flax. Let sit for 2-3 minutes and then add to the wet ingredients.
Whisk all your dry ingredients together in a medium-sized bowl. In a small bowl, mix the egg yolk with the milk and agave; slowly whisk in the oil. Add wet ingredients to dry and mix thoroughly.
Heat a frying pan or griddle over medium-high heat and lightly coat with oil or butter. Pour batter by tablespoonfuls onto hot frying pan or griddle, making a few pancakes at a time. Cook, flipping over until each side is golden brown.
Option: add cinnamon to the batter and serve with fruit puree
Nutritional Information
Flax is an excellent source of fiber and omega-3 and 6 essential fatty acids.
Chia powder is one of nature’s super foods. It is a complex protein offering all eight amino acids. It is high in fiber, omega-3 and 6, calcium, iron, folate, potassium, magnesium, and antioxidants.
Agave syrup is a natural sweetener and has trace amounts of calcium, potassium, magnesium and iron. It has a low glycaemic index, meaning that it does not affect blood sugar and insulin levels as sugar does.

Here is a family favorite pancake recipe for everyone: Banana Oatmeal pancakes
DH makes these every saturday for the fam. He does 1/2 recipe for himself, a hungry 3.5 yo that can eat more than me, and a preggo mama. We freeze the leftover 1 or 2 and DS has them for breakfast sometime during the week, just pop in the toaster.
1 1/2 cups flour (we use a locally milled soft wheat flour)
1/3 cup wheat germ
1/3 cup quick oats
1 Tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups milk
1 ripe banana, smashed
3 Tablespoons real maple syrup
1 Tablespoon canola oil, plus more for the skillet (but we use a nonstick large electric griddle with no oil on it)
Mix dry and wet ingredients seperately, then combine.
Enjoy!

Hi Mashi :)
Honestly, I hate following recipes :P I just put the rice flour and baking soda in a mixing bowl and added formula until it was the right consistency... If I had to guess maybe 5oz? I just assumed I needed more because I didn't use neocate so it was a different consistency. I never thought of adding brown sugar though, that is a great idea! :)

thanks! ;D I am going to try them. I hope she likes them. I am planning to give them to her as finger foods. She doesn't like her food to be lumpy yet-gags and gags.

I think you can use any whole wheat pancake mix. It is quick and yummy.

I found the recipe on the Necotate site:
2/3 cup (125g) rice flour
½ teaspoon of home made baking powder (see recipe above)
100ml Neocate formula
1-2 teaspoons of permitted oil
Serving: 6-8 small Pancakes
I am goint to go to the store tomorrow and investigate whole wheat pancake mix.
-
Yes that is the Neocate one. But as Vikki said, I just keep adding more formula - about 100ml of formula for 1/3 cup of rice flour seems to do it. Now I just add a big scoop of flour to a bowl and slowly add formula without paying attention to quantities. It does need to be thick thick thick or it won't cook, but I do think that the Neocate must be watery compared to Nutramigen.
-
We use good start formula so can I use that to make them? What type of flour, other than rice flour, can I use? I have to go buy some flour.
-
Hi, Im interested in giving my LO pancakes too, but he is BF. I wonder if anyone have recipes that is not using formula and eggs yet ?
-
I would just use expressed milk to make the pancakes!
The recipe I use does not require eggs and as I said I no longer follow a recipe - a big cup of rice flour and then slowly add milk (expressed BM would be okay) and stir, slowly adding more milk as needed until it is a nice thick, smooth batter. It should be very thick, not runny. Ad a tiny spoon (like a finger pinch) of baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) so they will rise. I also add a pinch of cinnamon and a tiny pinch of sugar for taste.
Heat a bit of oil in a pan and spoon the batter into the pan in small pancakes. The pan needs to be very hot. When they start to bubble on the top, flip the pancakes and cook anther 2 - 3 minutes. VERY easy recipe!
-
Could you substitue the rice with oat flour??
-
Absolutely! On the neocate website it actually says rice flour or any other 'permitted flour', so you should be fine :)
-
great thanks! :)
-
I make them with:
1 egg
4oz self raising flour
1oz caster sugar (will not add that much if for DS)
1/4 pint milk
They are the small, fatter ones (drop scones). Mix all together and cook in frying pan with little bit oil/butter to stop sticking! Yum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Mmmm - firsttimemummy... Made these today! DS loved them...so did I!!!!
Thanks for the recipe!
-
You are welcome! We like them too!!!
My friend adapted them (well completely changed them!) to make them healthier and they seem nice too (not tried them but DS has!):
1 weetabix
1 egg
3oz flour (they use wholemeal, but can use self raising instead)
1/3 pint of milk
Think you just crush the Weetabix and mix it all and cook like before. They again are the drop scone ones rather than crepes. Not tried making them myself yet ...
