How much milk?
« on: March 24, 2009, 21:55:16 pm »
How much milk 'should' Stan be having now?

He is BF first thing in the morning and last thing before bed. He has milk in his breakfast cereal, and a sippy of milk which he usually drinks half with his lunch and half after his nap. But his eczema is bad and I've a hunch that cows milk makes it worse so I'm wondering about giving him water instead of milk with his lunch, and a snack mid-afternoon.

Hi Anna,

In Canada, the recommendation for 1-5yo is 500mL or 2 cups of cow's milk or equivalent (cheese, yoghurt, etc)  It really isn't necessary for children to drink cow's milk if there is a problem (or dislike for it) as long as their overall diet is balanced and is getting the calcium from other sources (veggies or fortified juices).  There was a time when cow's milk was really bad for dd's eczema (2yo or something) and her ped recommended that we offer her soy-based drinks.

In the UK it is also recommended to have 20oz until they are 5, but can include other sources of dairy too like yogurts, cheeses, custartds etc.
