Is smoked salmon ok for toddlers?
« on: April 10, 2007, 19:27:31 pm »
My 16mo LO loves smoked salmon - as do I - so I let her have it for lunch occasionally as she always wants it whenever she sees me eating it.  The sodium content isn't listed on the packaging so I have no idea how much it contains although I know that it is quite high...  Her diet is generally low in sodium as I don't salt any of the food I cook and I cook nearly everything we eat so I'm not too worried.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows what the sodium content of smoked salmon (and/or other smoked fish) is and what the general sodium guidelines for toddlers are!

Not sure - but ds has it quite a bit, and he's still here, so I'm guessing it's OK :)

Liv eats smoked salmon for lunch (and sometimes breakfast) at LEAST every other day (it is one of the few foods i rely on to feed her  ::)) we also don't salt food for her generally 9and she also lives on olives and we just rinse the green ones that are salty)

Sam has it quite regularly too. Salt is used in the curing process but I don't find it really tastes salty?? Anyway Sam's alive and healthy too :-\

This site says about 4 slices (85g) has 430mg of sodium:

Then compare it to this site:
http://oto.wustl.edu/men/sodium.htmg

100g of bread contains 300-500mg of sodium
100g of cottage cheese 406mg
100g cheddar cheese 620mg
