When Tyler was a wee babe, he didn't like pat/shh either. The shhh was okay, but the patting just plain wound him up. After a lot of experimenting, we found that laying a hand on his chest or thigh, sometimes stroking and sometimes not depending on his mood, worked better than patting for him. He also needed to have his eyes shielded, he just could NOT stop looking around. So one hand shielding his eyes (sometimes even touching his forehead), other hand on chest or thigh, and doing the shhh. The swaddle is key too...if you aren't swaddling her, I highly recommend it. Hang in there...like Jenn said, it does get better!
