What happend?
« on: January 30, 2013, 06:14:40 am »
Hi

Iam after some advice. I have had trouble with short naps and I increased A time and for the past couple of days I was getting 1.5-2hr naps. All of a sudden today has gone back to short naps. I haven't changed anything. Only thing is that she didn't have her reflux meds for a day. Can this cause it?
She self settles well with out dummy but have had to extend naps with dummy. Also once she has had a short nap that I can't extend she hardly goes back to sleep even with me rocking her.

What is going on?

It could be because she is in discomfort with no Reflux meds. But it can also be because she needs another increase of her A, can't say till I see a routine. If you want you can post one and we can have a look.

Here is her easy,

She had a good day today. I increased until 1.50-1.55 A time. However she is still eating on a 3.5 hr EASY.

WU: Between 6am-7am (normally 6.30-6.45)
E: 7am
A: 1.50hr
S: 8.40-10.10am (1.5)

E: 10.40pm
A: 1.50hr
S: 11.45-1.15pm (1.5)

E: 2pm
A: 1.55hr
S: 3.10- (still asleep at 4.30pm)

Then normally it is BT at 7pm. This is give or take 6.45-7pm depending on when she wakes up from last nap.

She is getting closer to the 2hr A time however is only sleeping 1.5 hrs and eating at the 3.5hr mark. I don't have a problem with this as I know the 1.5 hr is restorative, but if she wakes after 1.5hr at her last nap then that will mean she has over her A time until bedtime. She doesn't take a CN either. Is it ok for her to have a longer 3rd nap?? for example 2hrs or should the morning nap be longer?

she will be 17 weeks on monday.

this morning she woke at 6am, feed at 6.30. every day is different with naps. for example today she will have to have 4 naps, yesturday she had 3 and other days she could have 2 and a CN. She is starting to stay up on the 1.50-2hr A time, but doesnt have the 2hrs sleep. I tend to be feeding an hour after she has been up.

Just before, she had and A time of 1.55 and only slept for an 1.10hr. Which ment she woke up at 9.05, feed at 10am and then back to sleep at 10.50am cause she is tired from the short nap. I just can't seem to get on track with sleeping and feeding. If she has a 1.5hr sleep this nap she will wake at 12.30pm and her next feed isn't till 1.30-2pm and then she will be going back down after her feed. its like I have AEAS.

So today went cr@p, here is how it went

WU:6am
E:6.30am 6oz
A: 1.55hr
S: 7.55-9.05am

E: 10am 5oz
A: 1.50hr
S: 10.50-11.25 (tried to extend with shh/pat, dummy, nothing, got up and then rocked back to sleep) Slept on me from 12.15-1.40pm

E: 2pm 5oz
A: 1.55hr
S: 3.40-4.10 )tried to extend with shh/pat, dummy, nothing after 30mins got up for a bit of A time and tried again wouldn't sleep had to rock to sleep, asleep at 5.30pm woke at 5.50pm

E:6pm 5oz
A: bath and bt rountine
S:sleep by 7pm.

The trouble Iam having is that she can sleep independently and each time I have put her down for a sleep she is asleep within 5 mins and without dummy or my help, it's getting her back down after a failed nap.

but if she wakes after 1.5hr at her last nap then that will mean she has over her A time until bedtime.
Then you'd need to do an EBT.
She is starting to stay up on the 1.50-2hr A time, but doesnt have the 2hrs sleep. I tend to be feeding an hour after she has been up.
This problem is temporary because the A will keep on increasing as she grows older and then it will fall into place. Yes, right now it's maybe difficult but an EBT should help with that.
its like I have AEAS.
Yep, that's how EASY usually looks like in times of transition: EASAE.

Looking at your EASY today it seems that the first nap was UT and then because the nap was rather short a full A time after that was too much for her and the rest of her naps were OT. Don't worry, it happens.
IIWY I would increase the A time again, because it seems, at least in the morning that she can do more than 1:50-1:55 and hopefully that should fix the nap as well.

Re extending naps, it's not an easy thing to do for many mommies. I have NEVER managed to extend DS' naps until he was like 1.5h old and I could just go into his room and tell him to go back to sleep.
You have two options which I can see. One is to not extend the naps and rely more on tweaking the A to get better naps or to extend with pat/shh instead of the props, 'cause I think that might be a part of the problem, yk?

Ok so here is how today is going so far.

WU: 5.50am (left in cot playing until 6.15am)
E: 6.15am 5oz
A: 2hrs
S: 7.50-9.15am

E: 9.45am
A: 2hrs
S: 11.15am-12.45

E: 1.30pm
A: 2hrs
S: 2.45-3.15pm (tried to extend with shh/pat for 30 mins and then stopped)

Iam going to try for another sleep with a reduced A time and see what happens.

I just can't get my head around naps it's starting to drive me crazy

Why? Look what you achieved already - you had 2 great naps today - the first and the second!

Thanks,

I tried the reduced A time for the afternoon nap, reduced it down to 1.15hrs as she got cranky. Tried to put her down with shh/pat and nothing had to use the dummy to calm her down and then she slept from 4.50-6.15pm then BT at 7.45 fell asleep on her own.

I think I need to chill out a bit more about sleep.

Just wanted to check if she wakes up at 6am which she has been doing the past couple of days since sleeping through the night. Should I be making bed time 6.30 not 7pm?  I think this is too early and she will wake up earlier if I do this. Even last night when she went to bed at 7.45pm she still woke at 6am.

My DS also always woke up at 6AM no matter if I put him later than his usual BT (19), but if I put earlier then he woke up earlier, yk?
It's really something you'd need to try out, because there are many mommies here that an EBT works well for them and LO will still wake up in the morning in a reasonable hour.

Ok so I still don't know what is happening. The last couple of days have been wonky. My dd is waking between 5am-6am she won't settle. I have ended up feeding and then she has slept with me until 7.30am. I can't seem to get an easy that looks the same each day. Yesturday she woke at 5.11am we tried to resettle but feed at 5.30pm and she was asleep at 6.11am. Today it was 5.30am tried to restyle feed at 6am and was going to start the day but she fell asleep right after the bottle and has slept till 7.30am.

Any ideas on what is going on?
