A little worried my LO is not getting enough...
« on: June 30, 2013, 01:52:04 am »
My dd is 5 months exactly this week.  I am worried because she recently dropped her NF occasionally so I am worried she is not getting enough to eat.  She is EBF and not on solids yet.

E wakes for a small feed around 9pm

It's so hard to tell when you are breastfeeding!  She only nurses for about 10-15min on one side only!  Can one breast really make 6-7oz of milk in one feeding???  She is growing on her curve still as of her 4 month checkup...

A breast will make as much milk as a LO is asking it to make.  Is there anything particular that's making you think she's not having enough milk apart from stopping the NF?

Just popping on to say that DD had four daytime feeds and one night feed (sometimes missed it) at this age, ten mins was a long feed for us and she did just fine :).

i was always worried about what DD was taking
because i wasnt "demand" feeding,so to speak,so I
used to bring her to a free clinic every week to get
weighed.it became our social outing!

10-15 mins is long compared to what we had here. Mine were down to 8 and 6 mins by this age.

I'm sure she is getting enough if she has stopped waking for a NF, that is a good sign no?

Thanks everyone - I guess I just had to hear some other ladies who went through the same thing!  So many of my friends do the demand feeding thing and their lo's still eat 8 to 10 times a day and have multiple nw's...  Yeah she's healthy and I have a scale I could check her weight with.  Just wanted to make sure it was not unusual!

Mine were both on 5 feeds at this stage, with an odd 6th if some feeds were distracted ;-)
No worries if she's keeping her curve and STTN x

I pump during my DD 2 day feeds, and (at least in the morning) I have been able to pump more than 5 oz from a single side (though 3-4 oz is more common). I like to beleive that my DD is able to nurse better than I can pump, so it's possible for her to get 6 oz on one side. If you're nervous about quantity you can always offer the second side after you finish the first (My DD will only occassionally want from the second side).

Yeah ok - I have actually pumped about the same amount at night when dad used to give her a bottle (she doesn't take a bottle anymore ???) Thanks for giving me feedback!

My first was definitely on only 5 feeds a day including the dream feed at that age.  I think your baby sounds like she is doing great!
