Almost 10 Month old NW
« on: April 26, 2012, 21:47:31 pm »
Hello,

I need help. My almost 10 month old has never slept through the night. I feel like I have done everything the book says but nothing is working. Here is our schedule.

6:30 - Wake, Breastfeed
8 - Rice cereal breakfast
9 - 11 - Nap (Falls asleep on his own with soother)
11 - Breastfeed
12 - Lunch
2 - 4 - Nap (Falls asleep on his own with soother)
4:00 - Breastfeed
5:30 - Dinner
6:00 - Breastfeed
8 - 8 oz Formula and Bed
12 - NW (very short, put soother back in and he falls asleep)
4 - NW (sometimes up for 1.5 hrs!)

Please help! I do not feed him at night anymore. 12 NW is easy but 4am wake is painful. I pick him up to calm him down and put him down when he is calm. Then I stand by him until he is sleepy. But every time I leave the room he screams sometimes it is 5 or 10 mins after I leave. What do I do?! I dont' want to do CIO but I am very tempted!

Hi there,

Sonds like your LO needs less day sleep to be tired to sleep all night ;) 4 hrs is a lot of nap sleep at this age.

First I would try pushing out that first nap to 3 hrs A time then capping at 1.5 hrs.
Then offer the next nap after 3-3.5 hrs A and again, ap at 1.5 hrs. BT 3.5-4 hrs later

CIO wont help hun, honestly I think things will be back on track soon with less day sleep :)

So...yourEASY will look like this
WU 6.30
Nap 9.30-11
Nap 2.30-4
BT 7.30

You may find you need to cap one nap more too if after a week or two you don't see much progress x

So far this is not working. I've had to wake him from both naps after 1.5 (morning nap at 9:30) and then 2 hrs (afternoon nap at 1) and he is still waking up at night. Last night was worse. He was up from 12-1 and then 2-4 and then up at 7. AHHH I'm going to go  crazy any more ideas?

Okay I read this. Basically I need to keep it up. Last night was horrible again. He was up 4 times and one of those times lasted for an 1.5hrs. It seems like it's getting worse not better. I'll keep in touch :D

SO are you waking from both naps? - I would cap one at 1hr or 45mins and then let him sleep as long as he likes for the other. THis helps to encurage 1 long nap with the 2-1 so eventually the shorter one becomes a CN, and then is dropped.

Make sense ???

Also - Whichever nap you choose to cap the A afterwards is brought forwards to prevent OT.
So with a 45min AM nap your day would look like this
WU 6.30
A 3.5 - work on gradually moving this closer to 4hrs as you need to over the next few months
Nap 10-10.45
A 2.5 hrs
Nap 1.15-3 (or as long as he likes)
A 4
BT 7

Hi there, just wanted to say that I had some fab results with this same kind of problem; my 10mo hadnt been tired enough to go down at bedtime for the past month. We worked out a new nap schedule, by cutting dramatically the morning nap ensures a long afternoon nap much earlier on in the day, which in turn ensures that by bedtime baby has been awake a good chunk of time and is tired enough to go to bed. Hopefully the capped daytime naps will ensure a more restful nights sleep, and hopefully no NW...

I tried this today, and honestly, it worked like a dream, typically my LO would fight going to sleep at bedtime for 2hrs.

07:00 Wake up and breakfast
09:00 Nap capped to 45mins
11:45 Lunch
12:30 Nap capped to 2hrs
05:00 Dinner
07:00 Bedtime

The short thread is here:

Okay so this is where we are at:

7:30 - BF and Wake
8:30 - Solids
11:00 - 8 oz Bottle
11:30 - 1:00 - Nap
1:30 - Solids
3:00 - 8oz Bottle
5:30 - Solids
7:30 - 8oz Bottle then bed
2:00 - wakes (often for 1.5hrs)

I have been doing this for a few weeks. Sometimes he has two naps if he shows signs of being tired but generally he is okay with one nap. When he wakes at night I don't pick him up. I put the soother in his mouth and put my hand on his back. I wait until he is quiet and leave. He will be quiet anywhere from 5 -20mins and then cry again. I wait a minute before I go in to give him a chance to self-sooth. I am going back to work full time in Sept. and I have to solve this before then or I won't make it. Any new ideas?

Hi there kdewolde, it sounds to me like he's gone from one extreme to the other; having quite a lot of daytime sleep and a long NW, to now drastically less daytime sleep and still a NW.  Was there any time in between when he didn't have the NW?  Did you not have luck with a morning CN and a longer afternoon nap? One last thing, do you think he's dependent on the soother to go to sleep?  Does he know how to replug himself?

I think he's now OT, actually.  A 12 hr day is great, but really quite long for only a 1.5 hr nap at 10 mo.  Ideally at the beginning of one nap, you'd like the nap to be 2-2.5 hr in length with an 11-12 hr night.  What seems to have happened is that the nap is long enough for him to not really be tired enough for another nap in the day, but it's ending pretty early in order to make it to bedtime. This is a scenario that lots of LOs run into during the 2-1 transition.

You've got a couple options to try.  The easiest at this point would probably to start pushing that one nap out by however much he can handle every few days.  So, add 10-15 min of A time and hopefully the nap will lengthen.  It may take a few days, but hopefully it'll start to get a little longer.  After a week or so, you can add another 10-15 min and wait for it to lengthen again.  The goal being that you want to get that nap into the middle of the day, so he doesn't have such a long A time to bed, which usually causes OT on one nap.  Until you get that nap to where you want it in the day, bedtime needs to come back.  I'd do it at no later than 6:30 pm.  Most LOs will do a longer night to catch up from lack of day sleep and make it all the way or near to their usual wake-up time.  This should help the NWs as well.

The other option would be to go back to trying the morning CN and longer pm nap, so that he's not going to bed OT.  This would take a bit of tweaking at this point, since he's used to that longer nap late morning, but can still work if you want to try it.  It might not be a good idea to cut from 1.5 hr to 30 min all in one go.  You could start by cutting to one hour for a few days and then back again.  The day (eventually) might look something like this:
W and E 7:30 am
Nap 1 11:30-12:00 pm
Nap 2 2:30/3-4:30 pm
BT 7:30/8 pm

What do you think?
