When she starts screaming, only leave for for the count of 10 and then go in and just give her head a little stroke and go back out.repeat as many times as you need, you should find it only takes a short while for her to realise you're still around and haven't left her.
Let us know how you do

we did the fade technique but our dd was closer to 3 so this make not work as well for a younger toddler.  We used to lie with her until she was asleep, then we told her we would sit with her.  Some advocates of this technique suggest just gradually working farther away from the bed and eventually out the door at this point, just calling out to her when she protests.  What worked for us probably b/c she was a bit older was saying mummy will sit with you for 10 minutes and then leave (no timer though because it would wake her if she was drifting off) and reducing the time every few nights,  eventually we got to the point where we could just tuck her in and then go.  Good Luck!
