Serious feeding problems with 7 1/2 week old
« on: August 12, 2006, 23:03:56 pm »
I have had feeding problems with DD since day 1.  Somehow we have managed so far, but here is our latest issue.  I have been trying to keep Kaitlyn on a 2.5-3 hour EASY routine, but am having real problems with her feeds.  Here was our day yesterday.

E - 7:20 (5 oz)
A
S - 8:20-11:30

E - 11:30 (4 oz) I had to wake her to feed
A
S - 12:20-2:35

E - 2:35 (2.5 oz) I had to wake her to feed
A
E - 1.5 oz
S - 3:30-4:50

E - 5:20 (2.5 oz)
A
E - 1 oz
S - 5:50-6:30

A - 7:00 (bath)
E - 7:30 (2.5 oz)
S - 8:00-11:00

E - 11:05 (4 oz)
Hard hard time putting her down after this feed
S - 12:00 - 1:00

I tired to feed her at 1 and she only took 1.5 oz.  She is having a hard time sleeping in the night and I can't seem to settle her to sleep.  I tried feeding again at 3:30 am and she only took 1 oz again.  At this point she slept the rest of the night in my bed so that we can both get a little sleep before the start of the next day.

So the big problem is... I can't seem to get a full feed in her at a time.  She will only eat a couple ounces, then will fight with me, cry and arch her back.  After A time, she has a hard time settling, because she is now hungry again (I think), and I feed her.

I think that she might have reflux and so can not stand to eat more than a little at a time, and I am planning on getting this checked out by a doctor next week (I think this will also explain the night waking problem).  But in the mean time I also noticed that if she goes 3.5-4 hours between feeds, she seems to eat more calmly and more ounces.  I have read in some sources that babies who are formula fed can go 4 hours between feeds and I am wondering if my DD is one of those babies.  I am having a hard time reading her hunger cues, because I mostly wake her up to feed, so she rarely shows any hunger signs.

Should I try to switch her to a 3.5 hour EASY to see if that helps her feeding?  If so, what do I do with that extra half hour?  She clearly can only take 1 hour A time.  Should I let her sleep like she really wants to anyways?

This is the EASY schedule I was thinking of starting

E - 7:00
A
S - 8:00-10:30

E - 10:30
A
S - 11:30-2:00

E - 2:00
A
S - 3:00-5:30

E - 5:30
A - Bath/catnap
E - 7:30
S - 8:00

DF - 10:30-11:00

IF she takes 6 oz at each feed, then it should work ok I think.  Daytime sleep = 7.5 hours... is that too much?

It might be worth moving your lo on to the 3.5 hour easy.  You may find your lo will want to eat more, and will be ready for the next bottle.

I found this link on the naps board, to answer your question about too much sleep during the day.  HTH.
