Breakfast Idea - He loved it so I had to share!
« on: September 09, 2008, 17:05:14 pm »
Hi!

Is there a specific place for recipes for toddlers? Feel free to move!

Anyway...just wanted to share this new breakfast idea! My neighbor is an RN and gave me the idea.

Basic recipe is just 2/3 cup of rolled oats (not quick oats) and 2/3 cup of milk. Make it in the evening and place it in the fridge overnight and then it's ready to eat in the AM!

You can take the basic recipe and do just about anything with it - for example here is what we had yesterday morning: 1-3.1oz bottle of strawberry drinkable yogurt, 1/3 cup milk, 2/3 cup rolled oats, about 1/2 cup frozen blueberries and 1 tsp flaxseed. You can also add nuts or dried fruit - anything that sounds good.

There is no need to cook this - the oats absorb the liquid overnight and it's the texture of cooked oatmeal except it's cold. So...if you have a texture eater - they may not like this.......

Anyway...it's a pretty healthy breakfast and Tanner, my 23-month old DS LOVED it so I thought I would share it!

Enjoy!

Skatty - do you use regular yogurt? Or the drinkable kind?

I've wondered if I can use regular yogurt! It's less expensive than the drinkable kind!  ;)

I actually use something called tykmælk, I m not sure what that is, it's danish, it is natural and I add pureed or fruit or honey to it but yes I have used regular yoghurt before but my spoiled madam doesn't like bought flavoured yoghurt, she likes it when I make it!

Fun! I didn't know it had a name! I did google it and found a recipe that also added crushed bran - that would add a bunch more fiber! This other recipe also said to add more milk in the morning. Another idea they had was to put grated apple in! Yum! Thanks for sharing this, Deb!

Skatty - I've never heard of what you are describing...I'll have to look for it the next time I'm at the specialty food store. Are you in the US? Where do you get it?

I'm in Denmark, I really have no idea what it is called elsewhere, I don't think they had it in the UK, they have so many different names for their yoghurt type products here and I really don't know what the difference is and nor does DH!!
