Bedtime for 4 week old???
« on: October 07, 2006, 19:42:52 pm »
Please look at out schedule!!!  What time should a 4 week old be put down in the evening?  I keep seeing other schedules where the children are going to bed earlier in the evening.  We tried this one night, and he woke up at 2:45 in the morning and thought it was time to get up for the day.    His schedule goes something like this...

e 6:00 a.m. wake and breastfeed
a  time with dad
s  no nap, will not sleep in morning most days

e  8:30 breastfeed
a  activity mat, read book, walk to extend feeding period
s  10:30maybe a short nap

e  11:00 breastfeed
a  very little activity, very sleepy
s  11:15-1:45 long nap (must wake to feed)

e 1:45 breastfeed
a  very little activity, very sleepy
s  2:00-4:00 another long nap

e  4:00  breastfeed
a  walk, read
s  5-7  may nap, may not

e  7:00 breastfeed
a  AWAKE!  Very awake in the evenings
s  No nap

e  8:00 - 10:00 p.m. breastfeed (cluster feeding until 10:00)
a  No activity other than constant feeding
s  10:00 pm  Bedtime

e  3:00 middle of the night feeding
a  No activity
s  3:30-6:00

Any comments are appreciated.  Specifically, is it normal to have only 2 long naps a day?  He has them basically back to back from 11:00 a.m until 4:00 p.m.  Then he is awake in the early evenings and doesn't go to bed until 10:00 p.m.

Hiya! I dont know what the 'right' answer to your question is but I know plenty of people who put their babies to bed at 10ish when they were your LOs age. I guess when they r feeding often its harder to have a definative bedtime but you should def stick to a rotuine. Am I right in thinking your LO feeds avery 3hrs? Hav eu looked at the example 3 hr EASY routine? You could also try cluster feeding in the evening followed by a dreamfeed to get LO to go longer at night between feeds. When he achieves thias maybe start putting bedtime earlier by 5mins evry day till maybe 8.30-9ish? How does that sound?

Hi there,

This is taken from the BW Book - The Baby Whisperer Soles All your Problems and includes cluster feeding.

Sample E.A.S.Y. routines (from page 34):

3-hour E.A.S.Y. (under 4 months old)
E:  7:00 wake up and feed
A:  7:30 or 7:45 (depending on how long feed takes)
S:  8:30 (1.5 hour nap)
Y:  Your choice
E:  10:00
A:  10:30 or 10:45
S:  11:30 (1.5 hour nap)
Y:  Your choice
E:  1:00
A:  1:30 or 1:45
S:  2:30 (1.5 hour nap)
Y:  Your choice
E:  4:00 feed
S:  5:00 or 6:00 or somewhere in between:  catnap (approximately 40 minutes) to get Baby through the next feed and bath
E:  7:00 (cluster feed at 7:00 and 9:00 if going through a growth spurt)
A:  bath
S:  7:30 bedtime
Y:  The evening is yours!
E:  10:00 or 11:00 dream feed

When my lo was 4 weeks (well up until anout 7 weeks), she went to bed very late (around 11ish). She had colic thou and had constant crying spells from about 5ish until 11/midnight and then she would fall asleep until next feed. It was not until about 7-8 weeks that she settled down a little and I started putting her to bed aroun 7-8. I noticed that if I had taken her out of the dark past 7/8pm, she would get "too stimulated" (by the lights, tv, noise, etc) and then would find it hard to settle. So if was to wake up past 7ish, I would just feed her and back to bed.
