tummy sleep & bf
« on: March 24, 2006, 16:39:48 pm »
i was a tummy sleeper long before i got pg with ds. i had to switch to my back and side for obvious reasons. last night, due to a period of particularly bad insomnia, i cuddled my pillow while lying on my tummy and was surprised to wake up 2 hours later.

i'd love to go back to sleeping on my tummy, but am worried that the pressure on my breasts could cause complications with milk production, flow, ducts, etc.

anyone have any experiences or suggestions?

tia!

I havnt heard about that before but I'd like to know if anyine knows if thats true. I sleep on my tummy too the only downside I've noticed from it is that (when DS was EBF) I'd wake up with two damp rings were the pressure had made my milk leak alot more easily. What do others think?

I have never heard anything about this before either.  I know at the beginning I was too uncomfortable to sleep on my tummy, but that quickly faded.

But, I guess another question with equal relevance is your breast size.  Mine are almost concave, so it doesn't really matter if I sleep on my tummy.  The only bit that sticks out actually squishes into my armpits, so I don't think I have any need to worry much about it.

I think it does depend on breast size and shape. Do you feel like you are putting pressure on them? Do they feel uncomfortable? If not, I would say go for it. I don't think 'no tummy sleeping' is a blanket rule. I sometimes do it and I'm pretty hefty in that department. You could always experiment with bits of foam. Aren't there clever foam pillows that would take away any pressure?

"Pretty hefty"  ;) Ditto. Prior to DS I used to kinda rest from the clavicle up on pillows, so that my "hefties" didn't squish against the mattress, but had a little breathing room of the edge of the pillow. My back was a lot more flexible then, so it didn't mind the odd angle. I'll try it tonight and see what happens!

Thanks ladies  :)
