Can someone have a look at my routine
« on: August 21, 2006, 16:52:14 pm »
Hi i'm new and have been trying to put my LO on the EASY routine for the past 3 weeks. I'm not sure that I'm doing it right.
Also I'm really struggling with naps. He is a short napper! Often only 30 mins.
He uses a soother but doesn't cry when it falls out of his mouth.
I use to breastfeed but recently weaned.
We used props before: rocking, using bf to fall asleep etc
He still wakes up during the night but it is easier to settle him now. We used to take him into our bed if he woke up but now he doesn't fear staying in his bed and settles easily?

Here is the routine:
6:30/7am wake up
7am bottle (was bfeeding until recently)
8am cereal
9:30 nap (a bit difficult to get him to sleep, should I move nap later? He seems tired but it takes 15-30 mins of PU/PD) He sleeps for about 30mins.. 45 mins tops
when he wakes up-11:30 activity (playing in play pen but won't let me leave the room, walk, shopping, crawling around flat.. etc)
11:30/12h bottle + solids
1/1:30 nap (this is a huge struggle.. I often spend an hour trying to put him down for a nap and he wakes up after 30 mins then I spend time trying to get him to sleep again..it works better for Dh so sometimes on weekends he'll sleep two cycles so for about an hour)
2:30 Activity
3:30/4 bottle + snack
7/7:30 bath
7:45/8 bottle, snuggles, story
8:15/8:30 nighttime

Thanks in advance

Hello again  ;D

I definitely think your LO needs more activity time. They are busy little people at 10.5 months. Here's what my ds's schedule looked like when he was 10.5 months

6:45/7 : Wake and bottle
8 : Cereal
8:15 : Activity
10/10:30 : Sleep
12 - Wake
12:30 - Lunch
1:30 - Botte
1:45 - Activity
3 - Sleep
4:30/5 - Wake
5:15 - Snack
6:30 - Dinner
7:30 - Bath
7:45 - Bottle
8 - Story, snuggle and bed

He's still pretty much the same but he's in the process of dropping his am nap. And his pm nap is definitely too early!!

You mentioned recently weaning and using props. Are you still using props? How long ago did you wean and how did he take it? These may be part of the reason he's only napping 30 mins.

Okay, maybe I'm trying to get him to nap too early. In the morning he seems tired though and it isn't too difficult to put him down. However, in the afternoon he just never seems tired, but cranky! I'll definetly try to move his nap later.

I've taken about a month to wean. I started with lunch, then snack.  He had no problem with the bottle as i'd been pumping my milk and having my mil give it to him in a bottle when I went to class (I was a student). Well it seems that he decided he prefered the bottle. For the evening feed he would get fidgety and start biting so I thought maybe I didn't have enough milk. So I continued giving him the boob, then a bottle after. The morning feed was fine. Slowly I got rid of the evening feed and switched entirely to the bottle, then recently the morning feed. Honestly he doesn't seem to miss breastfeeding. I think it was time to wean as he seems happier with the bottle. He likes to hold it himself.

As far as props go. He still has a soother. I'm wondering if that isn't part of the problem. He doesn't wake up when he loses it, but maybe it disturbs his cycle? Also, when he does wake up then I do give it back to him.

As I said I had a lot of trouble getting him to go to sleep after we moved, so we started co-sleeping, then we started rocking, bouncing him to sleep and quietly putting him in his crib. For naps I would push him in his stroller. we were desperate, and I hadn't read baby whisperer yet! as soon as I did I started the pu/pd. It's been tough but at least he'll fall asleep in his bed and doesn't scream when you put him down.

Good morning!  ;D

Well, it sounds like you said, he doesn't miss the boob at all. I don't think that poses as a problem.

As for his soother, if it falls out during his sleep and he doesn't wake up then it's not interrupting his sleep cycle.

Are you still rocking/bouncing/ using the stroller to get him to drift off? Because if you are then all he is is confused. If you are going to commit to EASY and using PU/PD then that's how you get him to sleep everytime. All you're teaching him is "This is how we fall asleep" a lesson that will remain with him. It will be better for both of you in the long run, he's already a big baby, so you can see how rocking him to sleep can be troublesome ( and icky on the back ).  If you feel like you need extra help with sleep props then check out our props board

https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?board=28.0

So today try moving that am nap later by a little bit and the pm nap by quite a bit and see how he does. Watch him during his A time to see how long it takes him to give you sleep cues. He may surprise you!

Let me know how you get on

Hi

Thanks for getting back to me :)

I'm not doing any accidental parenting stuff I used to! All that rocking which almost broke my back  ::) is over. As soon as I read the book I stopped.

I put Tristan down for his morning nap later, but he was tired before. He kept yawning from about 9 on and was cranky (of course crankiness could be due to teething). I went for a short walk and kept stopping to wake him if he was drifting off. At 10 I did his nap routine, by 10:15 he was asleep. But again, only for 30 mins and he woke up just miserable. Crying, rubbing his eyes. I couldn't do anything with him. If I put him down he cried, even holding him he cried. So I took him out for another walk until lunch.

Now he is playing on the floor by himself but he seems to be getting a bit tired. I'm not sure if I can hold off until 3 for his nap.

I'm wondering if the soother isn't part of the problem. I was always against the soother but ended up giving him one when he was 3 weeks old. He fell ill and had a high fever, at the hospital they ran all kinds of tests, took blood etc.. it was so painful and scary for him that I was talked into giving him a soother so that he would relax a bit. He's been addicted ever since  ::)

Don't stress about the soother. They all have a comfort item, for my ds it's his pointer and middle fingers  ::) and his lovey, a little blanket with a frog on it.  COmfort items are good because they are really teaching how to soothe themselves.  ;)

I think if he showed you signs of tiredness at 9 then that's when he should have had his wind down and a nap. Remember to follow his cues not the clock.  ;D

You also metioned that he may be teething. How about some Tylenol and some Oragel before his nap, that may be the reason he's waking up

Yes I agree they do need their comfort items. He has two: his soother, and a lovie. Sometimes he just likes to pull on his own hair; I guess because he used to do that to me while nursing.

I put him down for his afternoon nap at 2:15 (sorry I should mention that I live in France so it is about 3 in the afternoon here now. He woke up twice but I was able to get him to go back to sleep by stroking his head.
I have been giving him tylenol but I don't think we have the other thing here, what is it?

Sounds like he's doing a bit better by ahving his afternoon nap moved a bit later!  ;D  ;D ;D ;D

Oragel is a gel that you put on their gums and it numbs them, so it's instant relief for them. Call your doc and see if they ahve something similar that. I'm sure they do, because I live in Venezuela and we have our own version. If we have them in the 3rd world then you definitely do too!! LOL

P.S My ds used to pull on my bottom lip when he nursed and he does that to himself when he's drifting into a deep sleep. Isn't yummy that they remember those things??

Okay i'll check that with my doctor!

hehe mine did that too.. pulled on my hair, pulled on my bottom lip, even stuck his fingers in my nose  ::)

Cute though!

well he woke up so he did an hour and 15 mins nap which is way better than usual for me although occcasionally he'll sleep like that on the weekend for dh.
I just wonder when he will be able to actually sleep a full nap without waking up and through the night as well..

This long nap will help him to a better nights sleep, which will lead to a better morning nap tomorrow and so on.  ;D  He's starting to get the hang of it!!  ;)

Have a great day!!
