Title: Moving to a Bed
Post by: * Paula * on October 02, 2006, 20:04:08 pm
Thomas is nearly 15 months old.

He wears a pair of boots and bar for his talipes to keep his foot in a corrected position at night and during nap times.

His nap times are ok, because he is at nursery and they have them sleeping on the floor.

But I am finding that his night time sleep is getting disrupted as when he turns over he gets his feet boots caught in the bars or they bang on the sides and wake him up and he gets a fright and starts crying.

He sleeps really well on the floor at nap times and was wondering if it is too soon to move him over to a bed.  I am a bit scared of a normal bed as I am scared that he will fall out, but have found a air bed for babies from 18 months - do you think it would be ok to move him onto this to see if he would sleep better?

I have attached a pic so you can see what I mean about the boots and bar.

Thanks for your help.

How about putting the mattress from the 'big' bed on the flor.  That way he sleeps in a 'real' bed but has nowhere to fall!
Hope you figure something out that works for you both.

I moved my son at a year old, as he just never slept well in a crib.
We put the mattress on box springs, on the floor - no bed frame, and use a bed railing for the open side.  (oh, and don't bother with a toddler bed - most here will agree they are a waste, just go right to a regular bed)

His bed is in a corner, so the top and one side are against a wall.

He did hit his head against the wall constantly, as he has to sleep against SOMETHING.  So, it looks slightly like a mental ward, but I just covered some large pieces of foam with material that matched his room, and stapled the foam to the wall - so he has padded walls around his bed!

It works great. ;D

Glad i'm not the only mad woman . I also have anywhere i can padded .Ryan sits up in his sleep and literally throws himself back down , the amount of times he bumped his head. I have padded the headboard , the wall has a cushion off our outdoor bench running down the side.
We moved Ryan into a bed at 15 months because he ahd a very bad reflux flare up and then screamed when he saw his cot .We had no problems at all , we put his cot matress on the floor next to the bad and a bed guard on the side .
Wouldn't bother with a toddler bed either , not much room in them either.

Question about the toddler beds?

I thought the reason for them was that they were not as high as a normal single bed - or am I just imagining this?

They're not as high but they're also not nearly as big.  We decided to just go straight to a normal sized single bed as it didn't seem worth moving to a toddler bed that he would soon grow out of again.

They are practically on the floor .I think the matresses are very thin aswell

I think the idea of starting with the bed matress on the floor is a good idea .

So what do you think - should I make the jump and get him big boy bed, start him out on the floor and them move him when he is older?

Toddler beds use crib mattresses, so that wouldn't be of any use.  If you want closer to the floor, just do the mattress with no box springs :-*

Thank you all for your replies and advice.

After speaking to my HV today, they said the decision was entirely ours, but that she though that he may be a bit young to go into a normal bed.

So after a lot of thought, we decided to go with the air bed.  It is just a transition and when he is older, we will get a bed (saving a few pennys for now  ;D)

He went down fairly easily in it tonight, he cried out a few times, and only took about 15 mintues to settle, and he seems to be fine.

Here is a pic of him in his new bed.

Thanks again for all your advice.

Well our first night was fantastic  ;D

He only woke up once last night, I think he was confused about where he was, and he went straight back to sleep.

It is the best he has done in months.  Tonight he went straight to sleep without any reassurance.
