Milk in a Cup
« on: August 31, 2008, 14:50:40 pm »
Hi.
I'm sure there's postings regarding this issue around here somewhere, I just can't seem to find them! My DD drinks very well from a sippy, but will NOT take her milk in it. I've tried everything - different cups, when she was really hungry, not so hungry, different times of the day, etc. She just spits it out and then cries for her "bot"! She's 14 months next week and I was hoping to at least have her down to just two bottles a day. She has 4 still, but the two midday ones are opnly 3 ounces each. I've tried offering snacks in their place but she still cries for it! She never walks around with her bottle and just has it in my lap and is on her way so I never thought she's be attached to it. We are getting molars right now, but she still wouldn't drink it before they came. Any suggestions or tricks?

do you give her the bottle when she cries for it?  i wonder if the bottle was gone completely if that would help?  When we weaned bottles it was an 'out of country, no bpa bottles anymore' issue and i only had cups with me for 2 weeks, so we stopped using the bottles and reverted to cups.  there was no bottle option.  first few days milk intake was low even though they knew how to use the cups.  i think they just didn't know why the bottle wasn't forthcoming.   but after about a week, milk intake went back up and we never went to a bottle again.....not even before bed.

i know many will not advocate cold turkey, but i wonder if the bottle wasn't a choice if the cup would be more pleasing ifkwim?

I went cold turkey after Ryans 1st birthday to eliminate any need for them.  I did use a different sippy cup though just for milk.

I've tried the gradual method and it doesn't seem to be working for my stubborn little DD! I think I may just have to go cold turkey. At what age did the bottles dissappear for you both?

we were done really early (but it wasn't planned)....10.5 months.   when i came back from that trip i was going to give them still a bedtime bottle, but at our docs appointment i asked if i should do that as my weaning was done already and he really felt it wasn't necessary because they were drinking well.   i think most do it after a year, but honestly, the sooner it is gone the easier.  my twin-mom friend got rid of bottles at 15 months, so you are right in the range.  sounds like cold turkey might work for you. keep us posted!

Right after the 1st birthday as per recommendations. He didn't miss it.

Bottles disappeared with both kids by 13 mo. I cut down gradually, but when we got down to the last bottle feed and it was time for it to go, that was that. Once there were no more bottle feeds, they both started taking the sippy must better.

Another thought...we transitioned DD from the sippy to an open cup at 15 mo. It was messy at first and took a couple of weeks for her to get used to it, but she did and we haven't looked back. If you can stand the mess and experimentation, you might see if your LO is more interested in an open cup...

actually, Melissa is right about the open cup, i had forgotten to say it.  we use open cups at home for most meals and only use sippys in their cribs, and cups with lids (no stoppers) elsewhere.  we learned to drink and have always had milk in cups without stoppers, just lids.  someone gave us 'first years' (walmart) cups with lids and they aer great - not too much mess but contains the milk at first if you don't want to go open cup.  but truthfully, open cup gets them to drink more milk, it's more fun for them.  :)

Thanks for all the tips. We have always used sippy cups without the stoppers. She does try and drink from open cups as well (i.e in the bathtub - yuck!). She's just getting her molars right now and half the time, all she wants to eat/drink is her bottle. So I think I'll wait until these are through and then work on getting rid of them. I'd like to get rid of the ones throughout the day first and then work on the AM/PM ones, but I don't know if it will work with my stubborn little DD! I'll keep you all posted!

hi jenniferr!
we went cold turkey on his first bday.  he went about a week with pretty much no milk and just a few sips of water here and there.  then he just gave in i think.  he now loves his milk.  i think i just had to stick with it.  i also switched from the avent sippy to a straw cup...i think that also made a big difference.  good luck!

Thanks Tiff.
We are having some luck with a straw cup, the ones with Dora on them. She's down to just two bottles and milk in her cup with lunch. Definitely some progress!

oh good...it is nice when they start to cooporate!  i was talking to my pediatrician about how all of us moms share the same fear of or lo's starving or dehydrating to death.  so, when they decide to give in every once in a while i get a litttle more comfortable that i can keep them alive for atleast one more day!
