How do you sterilise your bottles?
« on: October 09, 2006, 20:05:41 pm »
I have recently changed to cold water sterilisation and just wondered how you sterilise your bottles and other equipment?

I have an Avent electric steriliser which I did use up until recently but when we went on holiday a couple of weeks ago I took my mums Tommee Tippee microwave steriliser as it's smaller to pack. When we got there the microwave wasn't big enough but as the TT is suitable for using as a cold water steriliser I just bought some tablets and started using it that way. I quite like the idea of the bottles being totally immersed in the water as it makes me think it's cleaner than with steam somehow but I don't like my hands smelling of chlorine and I feel it's quite a waster of water. I use 6 litres of water every day and that seems such a waste when it goes down the sink.

Does anyone know over all which is better for the environment, electric steriliser, microwave steriliser or cold water steriliser? I suppose it comes down to which is worse using electricity or water. I aren't super environmentally friendly but I like to be aware of what I'm doing.

We used cold water steriliser with tablet and then drained .Then we filled the steraliser up with boiling water to rinse the solution off the bottles/teats .

We used the Avent Microwave steraliser.

But when we went on holiday overseas, did not have the space to pack it in, so used the tablets.

I am not sure which would be more environmentally friendly.

Hi Sal
I use the Avent electric one same as you- I guess a 10 minute cycle once a day doesn't use that much electricity. I know what you mean about wasting water, I think that every evening when I give dd her bedtime bath and then listen to it all go down the drain... ::)

Just wanted to add - the Avent Microwave steraliser only uses 7 oz of water per steralising cycle.

Hmmm, I might go back to the Avent steriliser, I am really conscious of all the wasted water (and stinking of chlorine!). It doesn't seem to fit Dom's bowls and spoons in as easily as the TT one does though. I suppose I could use the TT one in the micro...
