Won't eat finger food.
« on: May 10, 2006, 00:38:52 am »
I have a 10 month old that won't eat.
He will only eat like 2 bites of fingure food and that is only if it is bread products or bananas.
He will eat a few more bites of fingure food if we hand feed it to him.
If it is banana's he will eat almost a whole one.
He won't eat any baby food either except baby yo, mashed potatoes, lasagna, or fruit product.
He refused veggies and meat.  Won't even try them now.

What should I do.

How long has he been doing this? Tyler went through several "cheerios only, thank you very much" phases between 9-12 mo. It usually only lasted a few days, no longer than 2 wks, and he'd be back to eating other food again (as long as it wasn't from a spoon). If it's only been a couple of days, give it some time and see what happens. In the meantime, you can sometimes pass other foods off as bread if you coat them in bread crumbs or crushed cheerios...super easy to do with fruits and veggies. You can also spread purees on toast or sandwiches. As long as he's still taking his formula or nursings well, he should be fine nutritionally until it passes.

No he has always done this.
Well sorta. He went through a month where all he would eat (finger food) was cheese and bread.
Other then that he has been this way since he was 8 months old.
I'm so frustrated about it.  I feel like he will never eat normal and have to have a bottle until he's 2!!!
Which is something I do not feel comfortable with.
When he was 5.5 months we started on fruits and veggies (baby food) and he loved everything.  Then he went through a couple of food strikes and is finally back up to taking at least 4oz of food at each meal.  But like I said he will not eat any meat or veggies at all.  Sometimes mixing them or discising them doesn't even work because he catches on.

Can I ask what milk feeds he is on and when does he have them?

Phoebe was usually a great eater but has been hell the last few weeks. Eating brekkie only, so today gave her morning bottle in beaker, and no brekkie.
She had lunch at at 1030am and she ate the lot, all chicken cass, slice wholemeal bread, half banana and half pear.
I spoke to my HV about doing this and she was OK. In the past Phoebe hardly ever ate brekkie and always ate lunch and tea. She then stated to eat brekkie and not lunch and only little tea.
I will be doing it for 3 days and than introducing her brekkie back again.
LO's have to see a food for approx 7/10 times before accepting it (so they say) so just keep giving the finger food at all meals even if not eaten.
If OK with eggs make eggy bread/french toast, make his food into paste and put into bread.
Does he like tomato sauce? I do one and add grated veggies to it and than puree it. She has no idea they are in there.

Also banana is quiet hard for LO to digest so it stays in system longer so it can give a feeling of been full.

He has a 6oz bottle when he wakes up and drains it.  But I have to go in his room carrying it or he has a fit he is so hungry.
Then when he is done with that and dressed and what not we have breakfast.  He will eat some pancakes that I make myself (only has oatmeal, egg, and fruit in it) and 2oz of baby yo (yogurt with cereal and fruit in it).
Then he nurses when he wakes up from am nap when done gets diaper changed and has lunch.
Then gets a 4-6oz bottle aften pm nap and a few puffs.
Then has dinner 2 hours later.  Dinner has always been rough for us.  i think because that is when he starts getting tired since he's been up for 2-2.5 hours.  But he should  be used to it by now. :-\
Then he has a 4oz bottle before bed (at least that is all he will take unless he doesn't have a good dinner).

Ive tried giving him his lunch before nursing but that doesn't work either.

You say he won't eat veggies or meat - are you trying jarred or homemade? I only ask because jarred meats taste like cat food IMO - I wouldn't eat them either. You can offer chicken by boiling and then pureeing into apples or something he likes (sweet potatoes work well too) or offer as finger food. Some mashed up hamburger meat works well too.
