Am I over feeding?
« on: April 16, 2011, 05:09:06 am »
Hi,

I know a lot of mums worry when their babies don't eat enough, I have the opposite problem

From 8weeks I had been combination feeding my little girl who is now 11wks + 5. her last weigh in was 2 weeks ago and she was 12.13lbs.
She's on 3.5-4hr easy through the day, feeds at 6.30-7pm, then 1-2am and 5-6am, (tried df but she then woke to eat 3 times per night!) her naps first thing in the morning and last one before bedtime routine can be hit or mis but her mid morning an afternoon ones are great as I'm usually out with the pram.

I have just moved over fully to bottles and she's draining 7fl at each feed (6 per day) my health visitor says this is a lot but if I try to reduce fl or stretch so she taking 5 feeds she goes crazy.

Am I over feeding her or should I just let her drive how much to give her?

Sarah

Be guided by her. She may just be in a bit of a growth spurt, and some babies are just very hungry.

Her weight gain sounds normal (not excessive) so I really wouldn't worry.

Hi Sarah,
When I asked my GP the same question you are asking now, she answered same as Liz - your baby knows how much she wants to eat, ignore the charts. If I would feed my LO what it says on the formula pack, I'll have a starved LO.
There are quite clear signs she will give you if you are overfeeding, she'll turn her head from side to side, try in different ways to take the bottle out of her mouth. Don't worry, she'll let you know.

Thanks for the reassurance, it's comforting to know you've hit the nail on the head about the formula pack I kept looking at the and worrying I'll just but some black tape to cover them and just trust myself and my baby.
Thanks again

Sarah
