Title: Talk to me about marmite
Post by: tylersmommy on January 15, 2006, 03:07:46 am
I've heard so much about how nutritious marmite is, so I picked up a jar for Tyler today. Marmite is pretty unheard of on this side of the pond, so can someone please help me with some dumb questions? :D
- Does it need to be refrigerated after it's been opened?
- You spread it on toast, right? Is there anything else you use it on?
Thanks!

Some people refrigerate it, and some don't, I think it's down to preference, you don't need to.  I never do, it's much too difficult to spread once it's been in the fridge.  Harvey and I nearly always have it on toast, Rhian hates it, so she doesn't :D  You can use it in sandwiches too, goes especially well with cheese, we often use it in our gravy for a little more flavour.

Oh, be sure to start with very small amounts, it takes a little time to get used to spreading it and the flavour is overpowering if there's too much :D

Also, be aware of the salt content, we only let Harvey have it on toast once a day.  According to the marmite website a 2g serving contains 13% of the RDA for a 1-6yr old :D

Yes, very yummy on toast in a very thin layer.

You can also make what we call Mousetraps (no idea why) - toasted bread, spread a thin layer of marmite on it (no butter), grated (shreadded) cheese on the top and grilled.

i still remember the first time Dh shared his marmite toast with me and i wanted to gag, 2nd time not terrible and by the 3rd i was hooked and happily eating it.  in the beginning definitely only a thin spread on toast (with lots of butter or margarine). don't put in the fridge unless you live in the tropics  :D  it turns into a terribly thick mass when refrigerated

my family in the states think it is disgusting but when i open the jar the cat comes running

Deb!  What are you doing!  You're in Australia now - you HAVE to eat vegemite.

Dh too.

I think there's a law, or something.  Actually, check your visa, I'm pretty sure it's a condition of entry.

Hmmmmmmmm marmite - now that's what I could have for breakfast!

Its true what the ads say - you do either love it or hate it!  We all love it in our house.  We use it on toast on its own, or we have it with cheese on toast.  Scrummy!

vegemite is for little girls    it is so much milder...

i was happy to finally learn (on our first trip here) what a "vegemite sandwich" was - all those years singing along with Men at Work and i never even knew what the heck i was saying

Oh yeah... Marmite is lovely  :D ... especially when spread thick on hot buttered toast.

DP cant stand the stuff  but Troy loves it.  Not that he has it spread as thick as me mind.  He has it on toast and in his little sandwiches either cheese and marmite or just straight marmite.

During pregnancy I have been known to eat it straight from the jar with a spoon

Possibly not the best thing to say on this website, but there's nothing better than a couple of bits of vegemite toast at 3am after you've had a bevy or twelve.

OK, so those days are over, but a girl can dream, can't she?

Thanks for the tips, everyone! We tried it today, and Tyler ate more than one bite of toast, which is usually a good sign. :D I went ahead and finished the rest of the toast...I didn't think it was gross, so I guess that means I liked it?

I gotta tell you, though, when I opened up the jar my first thought was "You have GOT to be kidding me!" It's kinda scary looking stuff!

Uuurghhh marmite... I am definately a complete hater of marmite... yuck!

I grew up having Bovril ( the stuff in a jar) spread in a thin layer on hot buttered toast - now that is gorgeous! I am not sure I would give it to a LO though as it is very salty.

Bovril on toast brings back memories of my grandparents every time i have it. mmmmm happy food for happy memories xxx

"I like my marmite to hurt" was once in DH internet profile... (we met on the net in a political forum)

It's best on mild cheddar on toast :)

ooh, my little guy loves Marmite and Bovril.  He always asks for 'Bobril toast'  and sometimes even has marmite or bovril spread on his french toast(eggy bread :D )  Also use it for stews, mince, gravy etc  Yum!

I'm definitely a Marmite mate.  I've had it since I was a kid and still miss it (I can get it from the English shop here, but it costs a fortune!).  Vegimite is ok now I'm used to it, but it sure doesn't beat the real thing.

We just introduced Beatrice to vegemite the other day.  She had a little bit on a crumpet and devoured it!
