i started dd on solids just before 4 months - just cereal though on the advice of paed for her reflux.  now i wish i wouldn't have started so soon because for the first little while she was ok with it and now i am having soo many troubles ie constipation, gas etc anyway i should have used common sense - if she has troubles with reflux wouldn't she have troubles with her whole digestive track?...and her reflux was under control so i think it was useless to start with cereal that early - live and learn i suppose.

as far as A time - she's good for anywhere between 1 hr 45 min to 2 hrs 15min depending on how well her last nap went.  i just watch for tired signs and go with the flow!

Caeden's mom - must be nice a little jealous here - we are doing a bit better but not that well!  gave dd dream feed and then she woke up twice after that - but it's some improvement.  just a  little curious here - i know your lo was born on june 11 also - what time though?

We started on cereal the week before he was 4 months and then the first jar food was greenbeans.  My pediatrician recommends starting with green veggies so that they don't get so accustomed to the sweet fruit that they won't eat their veggies.  So, this is what we did...each for about a week at a time...green beans, peas, squash, sweet potatoes, carrots, banana, applesauce.

Now he gets three meals a day (inaddition to his bottles) and he's a happy boy!

We are currently working in dropping the catnap and do okay unless we are in the car, then he sleeps.....
Caeden is usually awake around 7, naps 9-11 and then 1:3--2 ish tiill 3:30-4ish and then bed at 7:30. This is my ideal say and we have yet to get 2 - 2 hour naps in the same day but we are working hard on keeping the set naptimes regardless of the nap length.

Anyway - that is where we are.

Thanks guys!

Yea - re reflux, Marisa has rice cereal in half of her bottles per GI specialist for reflux (she is also on prescription formula due to MSPI). It does constipate her but it's necessary to keep stuff somewhat down...

We were dealing with the reflux over here and Axid was prescribed.  Sure has made a difference!

amystoker - did u find any foods made your lo gassy at all??  green beans were horrible for dd - don't know if i ever want to try them again.  we started with carrots, squash, peas, sweet potatos, green beans, pears, peaches, prunes only when i mixed it with cereal which all of course constipated her.

Hello everyone!

I'd love to join in!  Adam has fallen into a great routine with the exception of the past few days.  He's been waking up after 45 min. in one of his naps.  I'm just chalking it up to either a growth spurt or he's not wanting to sleep as much.  I'm still really happy with the skedge he's on.  :D

Okay, has anyone had any issues with their little ones not wanting to play independently after a little bit???  Sometimes he's great but usually he just cries or whines after a few minutes.  I don't want to just throw him in front of baby einstein all the time either.  It also depends on the time of day so I just don't know if this is normal for this age or I'm expecting too much.  I usually just end up letting him fuss for a bit with reassurements that I'm still there or playing with him, etc.  I definitely don't go pick him up at the first cry.

Any thoughts??

Elisa

Hey everyone,

Aiden is 5 months old and we haven't really started solids. I tried at 4 months but his little system wasn't ready. Too bad because he was 19 lbs last month! I hope to start him this month. But I was going to start him with pears. Rice cereal he didn't like and it stopped him up. Then we tried sweet potatoes which he liked but started having major tummy troubles. So I am thinking pears are good, easily digestable, and I don't know anyone allergic to them. My ped. told me to do veggies because he will develop a sweet tooth if you give him fruit.  I think this is bull. He will like what ever he is going to like. And if that were true he won't eat anything else after he taste the fruit. And I was started on fruit and I like veggies better that my Mom!

Has anyone else tried this?

I don't really have a problem with him playing independently.  He gets bored pretty fast though, are you sure that isn't it. What kinds of play are  you doing?

We were just prescribed Axid too and it is working loads better that the Zantac.

Welcome to all the new mamas.

We still haven't started soilds, but I'm thinking once he gets to the five month mark, I may start.  He can lean forward when he wants stuff now, he sits pretty well on his own and he stares at us when we eat and drink so I'm thinking he's getting ready.  I will be at my parents over the holidays so it may be a great time to start.  I will do cereal first and then veg.  As mentioned earlier, I heard that it will be harder to introduce veg if you don't do it first.

Owen's really started screaming when he wants something.  Namely not to be in his bedroom alone at bed time.  But I think he knows exactly what he's doing.  He listens after he screams to see if we are walking down the hallway.  Are they too young to be this wise?

Depending what he's doing, he can play independently for up to 20 minutes or so.  Especially if he's in his exersaucer or jumparoo.  He loves both for the same reasons as mentioned by the other mama.  I put him in when he was 3 months.  He just loved sitting by himself.   I too had to use a towel to support him.  But I can't put him in too soon after he eats or he spits up.  I'm happy we have both of the toys.

Things have been hectic here, an apt building three buildings away caught on fire.  We lost power for the better part of a day.  People we know lost everything and two ppl lost their lives.

Also, the same day I had to go get a tooth replaced, I was in the dentist chair for over 2 hours with DH and lo out in the office cuz we had no power at home.  My mouth is killing me and my body aches from being tense for 2 hours.  I'm so out of shape.

I'm gonna try to show you one of the pics we took of owen for xmas cards.[/img]  I just used the webcam to take a picture of real photos... wish we had a scanner.

I love that christmas picture its absolutly adorable!!

Tom started on fruit and he absolutly loves his veg (altough we havent tried green beans yet!!) I think it probably depends on the individual baby, its probably best to do what you feel most comfortable. I let him ds have plenty of fruit if he wants it, but try not to let him have jared food too often, as lots seem to have added ingrediants that im not happy giving him yet :?  He does have jars sometimes but i try to limit it (my freezer is full of pured fruit and veg!)

Tom doesnt play well on his own either, hell do 15 mins at a time (on baby gym etc) before he needs a litle company and 30 mins in his door bouncer. Hes much better than he was (when he was little he would scream if someone wasnt holding him or playing with him throughout his A time. Different babbies have different personalitys, and he just likes company (it doesnt have to be mine, hell merrily babble to a complete stranger for hrs!)and gets board easily if he does 1 thing for too long. Its exausting trying to find new things to do in A time, but its worth it to hear him giggle instead if grizzle!! (I probably should take him for more walks in his push chair so he can look at the world, but its just so chilly and wet out at this time of year   )

Had a bit of a nightmare day yesterday as tom started weezing and we had to rush him to docs ( V scairy) hes ok but doc thinks he may have astma like his mummy! Phil says next time hes going to marry someone whos not defective so he gets healthy children! :x   Ds had another bad night last night as his nose was blocked, so he woke every hr all night, i had the added worry of the astma so was also ling there trying to listen if he was weezing.  Think i may have to perspone putting tom in his own room for another week to alow cold to clear :(  i just want my room back!

Well i hope you all have a good weekend, Ive got to do a christmas dinner for 13 on sun, but i love cooking AND i lone christmas so i dont mind! Pitty my ovens not bigger tho, the turky fills it and i have roast potatoes, roast parsnips, stuffing, gammon and sausages in bacon to cook aswell! may have to be creativew and pre cook some stuff on sat!

ps sorry its so lng i really can waffle cant i?!!

don't have too much time right now - but what a sweet christmas picture!

as far as A time just recently dd has been better on her own - actually seems happier sometimes..which is a nice switch.  she never really liked anyone holding her for too long but she always  wanted someone to talk to - now she's starting to talk to herself which is nice for me to get some things done!

Love the pic!!!  I will try and post Cait and Ry's xmas pics later.

Yes, Cait will lay on her blanket for MAYBE 10 minutes and as soon as I get my hands good and soapy from kitchen duty, she raises hell.  It is so frustrating.  I have so much to get done with it being a new house, boxes everywhere, I have 3 parties tomorrow and then throwing on Sunday night.....(these were NOT my idea) and I just dont' know if I am coming or going.  But yet, here I sit typing you guys.    Glad to know that Cait isnt' the only one that is being an "attention hog".

I will post more tonight hopefullly.  TGIF!!!

Hi all. Rough night here - Marisa woke at 2:30 screaming. Not hungry - hand jammed in mouth - screaming. DH and I gave her some Tylenol and cuddles and she calmed down after about 15 minutes and looked at her crib toy/birds with us and fell back asleep at about 3:30. When I woke her at 7:15 this morning, she seemed fine - still pulling at her ear, which she's done all week. Fever only 99.4.

Anyway, we dont' know if she's teething (which it seems like she has been), also ear infection and/or head cold. Doctor says to wait and see how today/tonight is and bring her in tomorrow if we have a bad night or sooner if fever goes up at all. So we'll see - meanwhile, she's napping well - just seems a bit "off".

As for A time Marisa is pretty good about playing independently. After she wakes (or I wake her) from a nap she'll play in her crib and watch her mobile for about 10 minutes. Then we play together and do her exercises and sing. Then she will play in her Aquarium gym for about 10 minutes by herself. Then we eat and play together and read and take walks, etc until next nap time.

Caeden is doing pretty good in playtime - we rotate around the toys and he seems to enjoy that. He will play for 10-20 minutes when in a good mood on the floor by himself. Longer if I sit there for awhile too. I find the closer the naptime the more attention he needs, so I try to plan my time accordingly and we play together and do things just before nap and he plays by himself after waking and eating.

We had another good night - went down at 7:30, ate at 11 and 5 and woke at 7:30. YEAH!!!!!!

Luke does ok for about 30 minutes and then he needs some attention.  The only thing that will really hold his attention completely for that long is Baby Einstein.

I can't remember who asked....the only food I have noticed that he really didn't like was peaches.  I guess they were too acidic.  Oh, and mango.  He didn't care for that too much either, but then again, neither do I!
