How much formula to offer when weaning?
« on: May 26, 2011, 08:55:41 am »
Hi,
My LO is 8 months and currently has four bfs per day (around 6am, 11am, 3pm and 6.30pm).
In a week or so I am planning on weaning her off the 3pm bf and onto formula for that feed (the other three will still be bfs, for now at least).
As she is bf I have no idea how much milk she is taking, but she usually eats three good solid meals a day (when not affected by teething or a cold..).
How much milk would people suggest I offer her to start of with for that feed?  Obviously, I want to make sure she still gets enough milk per day, but I don't want to give her too much that she isn't hungry for dinner (I guess I will be able to tell if that is the case though).
I guess just some rough figures of how much milk a bottle-fed 8 mo usually has per feed would be helpful if anyone knows?
Many thanks!
Catherine

I am going to pop this over to bottle feeding... this is my inexperienced thought.... I would make up an 8oz bottle and see what happens.  She will likely not take more than she needs and if she does suck it down and looking for more, you can offer the breast and adapt the next day.

Proud to have breastfed for a combined total of 35 months

What Rachel said! Start with 8oz and see what happens! I would try the 8oz for a couple of days at least to gauge how much she wants to take at that time, you may find she takes a bit less but if she is draining the 8oz offer 9oz and see if that's better!
