How do I start EASY when baby does not feed upon waking?
« on: October 17, 2013, 15:49:03 pm »
Hi there,
I have had my four month old on EASY since 4 weeks. She is exclusively breast fed every 3.5 hours.

My problem is I am having trouble now starting my day on EASY because my lo will not nurse when she wakes.
For example, when she wakes at 730am, she will nurse for 2-3 min and no more. I have tried feeding her right when she wakes and even waiting an hour. She tends to want to feed two hours after waking (930 am for 2-3 min) which is right before nap time. If she does this it affects my easy because she would then be having her second feed 1.5 hours later around 11am.

What can I do? I have accepted that she will not feed long in the morning. (her last middle of the night feed is between 4-6am so I can see why she is not that hungry). I have tried to not give her this feed, but if she does not get it, she will not go back to bed. Please help me get my day organized.

Should my 730am morning be EAESY and then starting at 11am go to EASY?

This is my current EASY for my exclusively breast fed lo:

E - 7:30 (2min )
A- 730-9:15am
E - 9:15am (2-3 min)
S - 9:30 (1 hour)

E - 11am (5-7 min)
A - 11-1pm
S - 1pm (1 hour)

E - 2:30am (5-7 min)
A - 2:30-4:30

E - 4:30-5 (5-7 min)
S - 5pm (30-45 min catnap)

E - 7pm (5-7 min)
S - 7:30pm

E - 10:15pm dreamfeed

E - 130am, 5am
S - 5pm (30-45min catnap)

Thanks,

Hi there!

IIWY I would move her feed to later on. For example I in the EASY you posted I would feed at 9, 12:30, 16 and then a feed before BT.
Sure it's not ideal, but it's still 30min before going down for her nap and some babies just don't follow the book, yk? My LO always fed before sleeping.
It would be good if you can separate the E from the S with a little bit of A time, even a nappy change or a round around the house, so she doesn't associate feeding with sleeping.

HTH :).

Thank you for the advice. In your suggestion, I would be losing a feed. Is that okay? Currently, she is on the following:

Eat
730, 915, 12, 230, 430, 7

You are suggesting:
9, 1230, 4pm, 7

I know I am on the 3.5 hour easy. How do I know when to move to four hours easy which is 4 feeds a day. My lo can stay up two hours, but how do I know if she can handle 4 hours in between feeds? She is 17 weeks.

Thanks,

You basically stretch feeds when your LO shows no interest in the feed after 3.5h (more about it here: Time to Transition - 3hr, 3.5hr or 4hr EASY).

Sorry, I didn't notice about the feed, I wouldn't drop it just yet. I would offer a feed at WU (which she might take in a few weeks time when her NF change) and do the rest of the feeds like I mentioned before.
