Title: Advice please - MPI or allergy?
Post by: Buntybear on January 30, 2011, 20:48:30 pm
Hi,

Quick history - EBF but vomiting at 3 weeks after formula top ups, removal of top ups - vomiting stops, trials through BM = possetting. Milk removed from diet totally. Eczema on and off. Assume MPI - poss MSPI. Never properly tested soy so unsure. Def no vomiting from it though.

At 12 months scratch test showed Olly ALLERGIC to milk but not soy.

Now wondering if Olly was/is MPI at all or just allergic. We have never had any blood or mucous in stools. Maybe because he was so limited in his exposure to milk? Only symptoms were these tiny bits of sick and eczema. Eczema could also have been due to his wheat/egg allergies?

The reason I ask is that I have been putting off adding soy to his diet. He has had some soy in GF bread today out of desperation (no other bread available). Wondering am I likely to see a reaction??

Has anyone got any insights or ideas??

Hi,

Yes, it is probable that he has the milk allergy and not MPI.....even though it was just a little bit of milk before you removed it from his and your diet, you probably have seen something in his diaper since he vomitted so quickly.  Intolerances tend to present with GI and cold type symptoms.  Exzema is tricky because it can be related to food allergies, but many times is more environmental.

Honestly, you kind of already started the soy trial, so if he seems fine today I would give him the bread again tomorrow.   :D A food allergy will usually show symptoms right away, whereas an intolerance can take days before a symptom (I.e., loose stools) show up.  If he goes three days on the bread ok, I would up the ante with soy and just go for it.

Keeping everything crossed that he passes the soy challenge!!  Let us know how it goes!   :-*

Can you have both MPI and allergy?

Well, probably you could but it would be very rare A's it would require activation of 2 different pathways of the immune system.

I would guess it was allergy all along and therefore agree a trial of soy would be a good idea now, especially since he is over 12 mths. If the hidden soy is OK then try soy yoghurt for a few days in slowly increasing amounts to confirm.

He seems OK with the soy so far but hard to know as he has so many other things going on. Off his food a bit today although offered 2 slices. I am actually quite excited about this trial. The first EVER that may have positive results!

So he is still eating small amounts of the bread and so I have started to eat a bit of soy (those chocolate pots -YUM!) to make sure there is some soy going into him. On day 3 now and no noticeable symptoms! Still scared to go whole hog and give him soy but guess I will never know otherwise  ;)

Why not give it 5 days or so to you and if still nothing you should be OK to try directly.

Is soy tested for on the scratch tests??
